Friends are thinking of buying a timeshare (resale) to hang out by warm seas during week 52 every year. We've exchanged extensively, but never for week 52, so can't counsel them on this. Can knowledgeable folks tell us if they would need to own week 52 at the following resorts in order to reliably go there that week? They would need at least a 2 bdrm unit, and preferably 3 bdrms. They could either buy that week at a given resort, or use points in the relevant system, or trade through II. Obviously the least cost option is preferred, as long the chances are high for getting week 52. Also, the friends are likely to trade with some regularity, so would likely only buy an EOY timeshare to stay in, and either rent or use a cheaper week for trading.

Marriotts in HI
Marriotts in Aruba
Starwoods (now Sheratons) in the Caribbean
Hyatts in HI or Key West

I think all would be impossible trades to get at least 2 months or more from check in into a 2 or 3 br unit. Even if you own one of those you would need to rent what you own and then rent the other from someone else rather than go through an exchange company.

Even internal exchanges using points in the Marriott vacation club, hyatt vacation club and Starwood vacation club would be very very difficult and wouldn't happen most years.

In most locations, week 52 is the highest demand week of the year, and owners use it, or rent it for big bucks - they don't exchange it.

Also, Starwood has 100% control over what is deposited, and they would not deposit week 52 - they would keep it and rent it themselves.

Agree with the others, chances are slim to none on any of those trades.

I really would not expect to trade reliably into any of these resorts at those locations. Marriotts in hawaii week 52 is an event week so you would have to by that week specifically.
I believe the hyatt in maui is also a fixed week system.
Like others have said most owners would rent the weeks for bucks and not deposit them.
