Where is the best place to buy groceries when staying at the Royal Islander? Take a bus to Soriano at the Kukulcan Plaza? Take a longer bus ride to Chedraui Selecto? Go all the way into town to the Superama? To Walmart?

On our last three week trip we did all of the above. Shopped Walmart and Chedraui in town once each. However, we shopped most often at the Soriana at Kukulcan Plaza. You can take the shuttle to the Royal Sands and walk there. It reminded me of the clean WalMarts in the states. (Believe me, I have been in US WalMarts I vowed never to go into again!)

However, I was very impressed with the overall look, feel and selection of the Chedraui at Plaza Caracol.

It reminded me of shopping at Whole Foods. In addition to all the great things you could buy there, they had a terrific selection of prepared foods and a deli/cafe that had a view and balcony overlooking the lagoon -- it was very pleasant. A couple of times we went out of our way to get off the bus in that area to visit the store/deli. Of course, it was more expensive, but it was overall a better shopping experience.

There is an amazing deli/ wine shop across from Kukulcan Plaza called La Europea. It stocks all the things you think you never need while you are in Mexico. Think imported cheeses, olives and wines.

The Soriana at Kukculcan Plaza was on par with shopping at Mega/Target.

Don't forget Mercado 23 for the interesting experience!

All the way into town? Gosh, it sounds like a lengthy ride. It really isn't that bad.

Imho, a trip to Comercial Mexicana is well worth the trip. When we used to visit Cancun, we'd go a bit further and start our grocery shopping at Mercado 23. Their fresh produce, fresh squeezed juice in a bag, chicharones and cantinas are not to be missed. Then walk back to Comercial Mexicana to finish your shopping. Hop in a cab and you're back to your compound. Try it.

In short, no, not other than small 7-11-ish markets (literally), Soriana (not huge, they will deliver to the Sands, maybe others?) and the Chedraui are the closest. In between, just north of Kukulcan on the left is La Europea for other stuff.

That is right. For us, Soriana is the BEST choice:

(1) take free Royal shuttle (from Royal Caribbean, just beside Royal Islander thru the inside route between 2 resorts), to Royal Sands;
(2) Soriana is just 2-minute walk from Royal Sands!
(3) ask the store to deliver to your hotel room if it is too much to carry: just be sure to get back to your hotel in less than 2 hours: they don't deliver if they don't see you to sign (though they'd come back to deliver later...).

We used to call Taxi all the way to Cancun downtown and Soriana solves a big problem for us. For those staying in non-Royal hotels (or far from Soriana), simply take the city bus to get there.

On the separate note, not impressed by the Royal resorts: a little puzzled that they got high rating (like even higher than Westin Lagunamar as I remembered before)

Agree, Westin Lagunamar beats Royal Resorts

I agree, and I have said the same in reviews. Still, the Royal Islander is not a bad resort, or at least it didn't used to be...except for charging for gym use and having no laundry facilities in units. We will know more next week, as we will be renewing our acquaintance with the Islander for 7 nights before moving up the road for our annual 13-night stay at the Westin Lagunamar.

Perhaps the mandatory AI that is spreading through the Royals will begin to cost them in review ratings.
