I'd like to figure out whether I get a better deal on using points for a Mon/Tue rezo or book directly through Marriott for the room? Is there a general conversion that's usable to determine which one to use?

If you are using your own points, you just need to calculate the cost per point that you are paying by adding up all your annual maintenance fees and dividing it by the number of points you get.

I don't know of a thread about that but I have my own way of making that determination. It has come up when I've looked at HHI resorts in low demand season.

Since $.70/point is the going rate to "rent" points from other owners I use that for my calculations.

For example, Grande Ocean in January is 600 points for 6 nights = $420. On Marriott.com it's almost sold out at $191/night, $1274 total. DC points are the way to go.

Do you own points or do you get your points by converting an enrolled week into points?

I own points and non-enrolled weeks. So I'm looking to use the points I own.

Often weekend cash rates are better than DC point rates, and vice versa for the weekdays. January in HHI probably is an exception to this as it's probably the best point bargain in the MVC system.

I agree with Quilter that having a comparison rate using either the rental rate OR your fees rate, which are similar. I'd also compare to using Marriott Bonvoy Points or cash (with available discounts) where applicable. What you'll likely find is that anything MVC related will be better on points unless it's an area that's cheaper on weekends. For hotels, it's likely that either cash or Bonvoy points will be best.
