Is not paying maintenance fees really a good option for me to end my contract?

I saw some postings by seasoned forum contributors suggesting sometimes not paying maintenance fee would be a good way to end a contract, and I also read the guidelines on this website.

Can anyone please educate me on what really would happen? What should I do if they report me to collection? I currently have a 800 credit score, how much decrease will I see my credit as a result of this? What will happen if I continue to ignore any communications from HGVC or the collection services?

All I need is to end my contract with HGVC (4200points Ocean22 at myrtle beach, paid full)
I haven't paid the last maintenance fees due back in Jan. I haven't been using this timeshare for 2 years felt I shouldn't be obligated to pay them anything anymore.

All I want is to end my contract with them and be freed of any future obligations.

Thank you so much for your help and advice!

It is often mentioned as a last resort.

Since you have it paid off, it would be far more preferable to give away rather than default. I'm guessing if you posted it as a giveaway, you would find an interested party to take it over.

As Travelhacker suggested above, there are a few other options than defaulting. Most here on TUG would only recommend defaulting (deliberately not paying your MFs) as a last resort (no pun intended) if you've exhausted all other options.

If you are worried about credit score, there's a sticky thread that TUGger GrammerHero started which documents what has happened to other TUGgers who defaulted. For the most part, they came away unharmed but results varied.

If you own outright, you may also be able to do a deedback through the resort.

Thank you for your reply - I asked HGVC they will not take it back and offered to help me list it for sale - I'd much rather list it here.
