Most people don't have timeshares and earn points via hotel stays and credit card spend, etc. So, yes.

You do know that there is a difference between StarOptions (Timeshare-related) and Starpoints (hotel and credit card related). Staroptions are only gained through the timeshare system.

In other words, when (if) I sell my Princeville TS, can I still use (and earn) Starpoints to use with SPG without ownership?

If you've only earned SPs via your timeshare, be aware that they expire 6 years after you receive them. This is unlike SPs you earn via hotel stays and purchases on a Starwood-affiliated credit card, which have no expiration date.
