Today I opened a pile of mail, just a few days worth. Lot of Junk Mail Piled high with a few pieces of essential mail.

Made me think with the increase in packages being delivered it has to be taking a toll on the post people. Why it this junk still being delivered as it is non essential.

I hate all mail. But, the USPS earns revenue from junk mail. And if you read the news, you’ll know that’s kinda important right now even though it won’t solve the problem.

businesses that don't require people to congregate are still operating everywhere. Same as telemarketers. Even my dance studio is trying virtual lessons.

Couldn't they just throw it away and say they delivered it? [Just hoping]

Junk mail is like "pop-ups" on your computer. Someone has a story to tell and they want you to listen. Unfortunately, we all don't necessarily want to see the message. I spent 24 years being a service shop for printers. I learned: The advertiser pays the ad agency. The ad agency pays the printer. The printer pays the Post Office. And you get junk mail. The Post Office delivers whatever they are paid to deliver. Money is changing hands. Somehow, SOMEBODY must be buying the end-product. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it. I have to say that I do love the dining magazines that offer $10 off a meal for 2. Worth opening.

How would I fill up my blue recycle trash container if we did not have junk mail?

In the Tidewater Va area there had been several court convictions of letter carriers not delivering mail to customers. They did not received any ”Jail Time,” just 6 months to One year probation time and lost of job.

Junks mail is essentials to the USPS because it help paid their bills. LOL
I'd put this another way. Revenue from Junk Mail helps support the losses they have delivering packages for Amazon and others...

My solution. Raise the price on packages and junk mail. Revenue will increase and junk mail will decrease...

I would agree, I'm getting a lot of junk mail as well... Michigan is trying to help the Post Office by now having Some SE Michigan zip codes to receive mail every other day due to COVID-19. We also received notices that we need to wait till after the postal worker has placed the mail in our box and driven away can we go out and grab it. The post office wants to protect their mail carriers and I totally understand.

I would not be surprised if they also lost their pensions.

If we didn't get junk mail, on most days, we wouldn't get any mail at all.
I use mail, even it's junk mail, to validate my existence.
It proves that I'm not a pigment of my own imagination.

What makes you think they are losing money on delivering Amazon packages? Keep in mind the USPS is already obligated to stop by all addresses so even if they gave Amazon a sweetheart deal (as you would do for your largest customer), their actual cost is simply incrementally more since they already deliver to everyone.

I agree - but with Amazon going to neighborhoods every day the post office will need another revenue strategy other than delivering junk mail

As others have correctly pointed out, the "junk" mail is a good source of revenue for our money losing Postal Service. Matter of fact I believe they have lost money for each of the last 14 years or so. If the USPS was private industry then they would have declared Bankruptcy a long, long time ago.

With rare exception, the USPS delivers to every address every day (except Sundays and Holidays). It is a Service needed by everyone at one time or another, and it does provide access (and service) to rural areas in our Country with essential services such as Voting Ballots by Mail, Census information, and important package deliveries at a more than reasonable cost (compared to UPS or Fed Ex).

Granted, things aren't perfect by any means, but it can be fixed by maybe "thinking out of the box" such as delivery every other day, higher postage rates, or consolidating neighboring Postage Facilities into one (as opposed to three or four).

So, junk mail does generate revenue and provides beautiful starting material for my fireplace!

Perhaps USPS could make $$ by delivering groceries (non-perishable), along w-junk mail.
