Is it better to have a December RCI points issue date ?

I bought a resale on Ebay in October with 80,000 points . The listing stated the 80,000 points are issued every December .

I thought that December would be better because sometimes people have points they are trying to get rid of because they expire on their issue date in June for example. If I buy them will they be good until my expiration date in December of the same year?

Is this correct ?

It would depend on your vacation patterns, but I timed my transfer to RCI Points with resorts I already owned to make my use year start January 1. That simplified planning for me.

do you homework, it might not be what you think

I'm not sure there is any difference from one month to the next, when the dust settles. There are just too many variables, every owner vacations differently, and every situation is different.

Over the past couple years we've seen eBay listings with some surpluses of points that are about to expire (soon), others points still good in the current year and the owner wants you to compensate for the maintenance fee associated with them, and so on. A few owners have even borrowed future year allotments -- which essentially means the new owner is starting off in the hole (also borrowing), or has to skip a year for the account to even.

When the points expire is also important on an ownership transfer. Especially since it can take a while for things to get done. For instance, some counties are so far behind in archiving paperwork that it takes them 6 weeks to post a deed and then it can take RCI up to 2 months to open and transfer the account to a new owner. The devil is in the details.

What did I get myself into?

RCI told me that points roll into the next year. That a week of vacation would only cost me 9000 points. That I had 27500 that would be added to my account every other year. I still have a few days to back out. We "traded in" an Orange Lake week ($800 maintenance fee yearly) and a Mayan Palace week ($600 biannual MF). We still have 2 weeks at Starwood Vistana. We wanted to get out from under the maintenance fees and not make the kids inherit the headache of forever huge maintenance fees. Our new MF is 158 per year. It all sounds great, but I would really like feedback from real owners. What do you think?

The points do roll over to the next year, but there will be a fee for that if you don't do any transactions this year. If you do a transaction then they'll comp you the rollover. I avoid this fee by always borrowing ahead so I never have to face banking points.

As for the 9000 deals, well, they're not as plentiful as they were in years past. Speculation as to the reason is that "weeks" owners are not getting another form of RCI points equivalent for their weeks called TPU's which is snatching up all those last minute exchange opportunities. Another reason is that if any sales person sells RCI points in a previously all weeks resort then that resort no longer qualifies for the discounted 7500 and 9000 point exchanges. It becomes a "points" resort and the discounts go away. :annoyed:

How much did you pay to consolidate your ownerships? 27,000 RCI points isn't going to go far these days and since you are essentially getting them only ever other year then it's roughly 13,500 points if you split them up per year. That will probably be only enough for a shoulder week studio or less than 7 nights somewhere if you could find something that cheap. If you paid big bucks for this conversion I'd probably rescind and just give away your weeks and buy a cheap RCI points trader either on ebay or take one from the ones advertised here on this site in the marketplace or bargains section.

Hope this helps and welcome to TUG. :hi:
