HGTV has a new show about tiny houses, can't figure out if they're being promoted as the latest gimmick or as if they're the wave of the future. Not for me though - the few I've seen appear more claustrophobic than hotel rooms or timeshare studio units (although with more creative storage ideas.) Give me space and lots of it, for living in and traveling to!

I would compare them to owning a travel trailer - which are great for a vacation, but I would not want to do it permanently.

Pack rats need not apply.

Our 330 sq ft 5th wheel is about the minimum I want to spend any time living in- and not permanently at all.

I wanted a second home in California... but realestate prices are way too high for me, so I settled on a 350 sq ft tiny home (plus a 150 sq ft "back porch")

my tiny home isnt on wheels, like what the op posted, nor is it built on a foundation. My tiny house floats

Ive been amazed at the number of people that live at this marina full time, many on boats smaller than this one. theres a family with 2 kids, a number of single guys but most are old farts like me, making do on a relatively small fixed income

My sister and her husband bought a sail boat while they worked in Seattle. It was moored in the Bainbridge Marina. They raised my nephew on this vessel and moved when they decided to have another child.

I have some friends that lived in a cruiser for a couple of years while one of them was in the military. They were moored in Gig Harbor. They started a marine salvage and boat barnacle cleaning business.

I lived on my crusier for one salmon season at Illwaco. It was very interesting but not really my thing.

Jenna and Guillame started on their Tiny House journey prior to the HGTV series. They were one of the first episodes on HGTV.

Quit their jobs in their 20s and decided to travel across N.America blogging and giving demos on how to build them.

not yet

I dont know how to drive the thing, but it runs well (at least it did during the sea trial before I bought it).. This is a 35 yo boat as are the Detroit Diesel engines. so its a concern... But the real purpose is as a second home; a 2 bedroom condo on the water.

I plan on hiring a captain next weekend to take us out for the afternoon...but first Im buying towing insurance

New Wave...

New wave, old concept. When I was a teen, we traveled from Florida to Maine, into Canada and across the north. Then down the west coast and across the south west, south, and back home. Pulling a fold-up tent top camper behind our car. That year we spent the entire summer making that trip. No bathroom in our camper; no washer and dryer, no refrigerator. Canvas cots over the parents' beds for the kids.

I enjoy the HGTV tiny house show. They have shown some very creative houses. I could live alone in one...for awhile, anyway. Getting a little old for climbing up in those lofts though. :annoyed:

I could not live with the lofts - you have to crawl into them. Not my cup of tea.

After watching the tiny house show on tv I can honestly say that the composting potty is the thing that would stop me;)

Sorry ... my bedroom closest has more square footage - and has no composting potty.

To each their own ... I gave up having 3 changes of clothes, living in camps, showering under the stars in a swim suit or in public showers, sleeping on a platform floor or 24" wide cot/mattress when I decided college could provide a better standard of living.

Of course, college living was another "alternative life style" experience ... esp my junior year "in the Zoo" dorm (the dorms at the college were slanged named: Suburbia, Woodstock, the Ghetto and the Zoo). The real dorm names were Quad 1, 2, or 3 AND North Tower.

The trend is to downsize, get less materialistic, and use fewer resources (eco-friendly in both senses: environmental and economical). It's also about being independent and perhaps "living off the grid."

One of the appeals of these tiny houses is that they are often classified as travel trailers or sheds and thus require fewer/no permits. This makes the entire process less expensive and less time-consuming than building a house. So the project of buying land and setting up a house is affordable to a whole class of people who could not afford it previously (or who didn't think they could afford it because they didn't consider other types of manufactured homes as "real homes.")

My husband and I lived in Manhattan in a 400 square foot apartment for two years. It was really great. And our current home is much smaller than our friends' homes. We don't live in a tiny home, but we definitely practice some elements of minimalism. I agree that these tiny homes are just too tiny for us but the concept of shedding excess is appealing for many reasons.

Oh I should mention too that timesharing falls into this for us too. Owning timeshares is more economical and environmentally-friendly than owning a second-home that only gets used a few times a year. And in our current home we used some of the space-saving elements we saw in hotels and timeshare units.

Trend or fringe life choice? There is reducing one's footprint, and there is REDUCING one's footprint to the point of near elimination. The former could make trend status if a significant portion of society takes it on; the latter will only work for an extreme few (proportionally speaking).

there a lot of us baby boomers that for any number of reasons (budgetary) cant retire and maintain the same lifestyle we have grown accustomed to. Or for other reasons (health or mobility issues) need to downsize. My 350 sq ft boat seems extreme, and its only part time for me, but I have 2 bedrooms and 2 baths and a full kitchen.. Gotta say Im getting used to it and Im not particularly anxious to get back home. (2200 sq ft).

The one thing I would add is a washer and dryer... I dont like using the common laundry facilities

I think I could live in a travel trailer easier than I could live in a tiny house.

Your boat sure looks like it's been taken care of well. It looks like it was detailed recently. I'd love to see some photos of the interior. Lots of folks talk about buying a boat a second vacation home, but you're the first person who actually acted on it that I know (at least from TUG). Good for you.

we've been here about a month, and still working on the interior, the new carpet is down and we've spent some money at Ikea

here's what we have so far

It is definitely a very tiny house. I consider a 350 sq. ft. hotel room to be very small. Any house less than 2200 sq. ft. is too small for us.
