What would be the least expensive way to travel round trip from the BI to Oahu to do some touring (mainly Pearl Harbor), for a family of 4...two adults and two children (9 & 11)? This will be for travel in early March.

I think your only choice is to fly. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

I would start checking flights now and see what they're running. Hawaiian Airlines allows you to do a flexible date search. It looks like roundtrip flights (for March) are running between $174 to $200 per person.

Flying is the only option.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.

In the past when we've flown interisland I've been able to find some cheaper fares, but I don't remember the timing on them. Meaning, I don't remember how far ahead, or how close, to the dates of the flight I needed to book.

If you don't already have one, sign up for the Hawaiian Airlines credit card. They give you enough free miles as a signing bonus, you can fly inter island for relatively low miles. (Their website says 35000 miles if you spend $1000 in the first 90 days.) I think the last time I checked, it was 7500 miles one way on selected flights. If you and your spouse both got the cards, and therefore double the free air miles, with a bit of creative planning you could probably get the flights for free. Otherwise, it's about $100 per person each way. Spendy.

You may also be able to change your mainland flight reservation from in and out of the BI to one where you fly into the BI and out of Oahu. That way you'd only need a one-way ticket to Oahu for your family. See what you want to see, and fly home from there.

Inter Island travel

I thought maybe flying would be the only way, but thought maybe someone had a shuttle flight service. I am inquiring for our son and his family. Thanks everyone for your input.

Island Air had some Cyber Monday specials for their inter island services. Don't know if you will see this in time, McGregorlass, but you should hop onto their website and check it out. I can't recall their date range but they were advertising one way fares as little as $45 (or 40 something-like-that).

We have flown Island Air from Maui to Oahu and back and were happy with them.

Sounds good - we are on the BI now.

A lot of people on the mainland actually ask us if we drive here!

Yeah, but after they landed to motivate his army King K torched the outriggers so that his men knew retreat was not an option. The alternative to conquering the island was death - swift if killed in battle or painful and agonizing if captured alive.

OPs family might not take kindly to those options.

Yes, but haven't you heard mainlanders say "back in the US" when they are on Hawaii talking about the mainland? :D

Actually, it's not just Mainlanders. Tug member Frank808 in reply post #22 in the thread about the person being jealous of all our travels, mentioned, "Since we have to fly at least 5 hours to the US..." He lives in Hawaii. ;)

(Sorry, Frank. Not picking on you, just using your words as an example. :) )

Here's how to fly for free (almost). Sign up for an American Airlines Credit Card:

http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/earnMiles/beyondTravel/creditDebit/citi-platinum.jsp?anchorLocation=BP-Plat1&title=citi

They have a special going on if you spend $3000 in the first 3 months, you get 50,000 mile. They are partners with Hawaiian Airlines, and you can book inter-island flights for 5,000/segment. The card costs $95/year, but the fee is waived for the first year. You do have to pay $5.60/segment in fees, so it's not completely free, but you won't beat that price. We booked our flights from Kauai to Maui next February that way, and have plenty of miles left over for future inter-island flights.

Yeah, DH applied on the American airline site, and got a temporary card number right away. But you have to dig around the approval window to find the card #. Some of the AA site links say 40K bonus miles + $100 statement credit, other links say 50K miles.

If you apply on the Citi bank site or by phone, you'll likely to wait for your card number in the mail. The Citi bank card people couldn't tell us which sites would give a temporary number right away. Also it doesn't pay to convert-upgrade an existing AAdvantage (non-platinum) card to platinum. You get none of the bonus miles or 1st year waiver on annual fee.
