Looks like an ideal time for a passport renewal. We mailed our renewals on December 13 and the new ones were delivered on December 28. The issue date was December 22, 2016.

This was with no extra fees to expedite them.

Perhaps some government employees are actually working, for a change.

Most govt employees work very hard, your hatred of the government is tedious. It seems you try to insert your anti govt views way too often.

Good to know, but perhaps that ship has sailed. Millions of U.S. Passports are expiring in 2017 because of tightening requirements caused lots of new passports to be issued back in 2007. Those with no fairly immediate international plans should get the renewal process underway before the Summer travel season. You can get the renewal forms a many Post Offices. Use black ink.

Touchy, aren't we? But your labelling is overwrought and misplaced. It was a joke.
I am myself a government employee who has worked for the state for over 30 years.
I do know of some employees who spend significant time surfing the net.
But I agree. Many work very hard for only modest pay -- as do I.

My passport expires in April and I am traveling to Aruba a month earlier. Guess it's time to renew?

I certainly would. DWs passport expires in October and we are travelling to Mexico in May, better safe than sorry.

Passport Book + Card or just Book?

I have always had the argument that the card is a pretty useless document if you have the book. DW is saying we could take both on cruises and take the card off the ship with us while leaving the book in the safe. I say that the card is still useless if the ship leaves us behind since we would still need the book to fly. Perhaps we would be better to take the book off the boat and leave the card behind because if the book is stolen while on land, we still have the card to get back in to the country. I would prefer to just save the $30. Thoughts?

I got it as a back up form of ID. I always carry the card in my wallet. On occasion I have removed my drivers license for one reason or another and forgotten to put it back. With the passport card in my wallet, I always know who I am (also a joke)
I also live in one of the states that does not have "compliant" drivers licenses so would use this for US air travel ID as well.

I should have checked this. Thanks for pointing it out. You still have to make an outing to get the photo for it, which you can also get at the post office. Or Walgreens or any number of other places.

Yes for sure! Many countries require that your passport be valid for 6 mos from your date of departure from their country. DH & I had to renew ours 10 mos early last year because our expiry date was only 5 mos & 3 weeks after our date of departure from Belize (we were staying there for 3 mos)!

Some people have seen this requirement as arbitrary. Actually it makes some sense, as most tourist visas are valid for 6 months. It wouldn't do for visitors to have a valid visa in an expired passport.

I set reminders for our passports (8 months) and our DL's (2 months), both in Quicken's Scheduled Transactions and on my calendar.

I got both when I did my passport renewal just cause it was so much easier to do by mail, than go in person during business day hours to a driver licensing office for an enhanced driver's license. And the cost was comparable. I thought I'd use it more for going to Canada (we're about a 3 hour drive away). But have used it most when travelling domestically for TSA, rather than carting the passport book. I just keep my passport card in my travel wallet :)

When we renewed a while ago it was very fast. I was pleasantly surprised.
