The first thing you should know is--ALTITUDE. We stayed here a couple of years ago, at a timeshare on TOP of a HILL. BTW, if the sign says don't leave your garbage on the porch - DON'T leave your garbage on the porch!! Pesky raccoons!! It took a couple of days to get use to the thinner air. This is a horse town; a great horse museum and horse racing. There are several ski resorts nearby but, with the weather being so WACKY it's hard to predict snow (or mud)? Two excellent Indian gaming casinos nearby. I don't recall much else in the area.
I haven't been to Ruidoso for a couple of years but, assuming things haven't changed, I highly recommend the Hubbard museum (same side of the street just East of the Race Track); the Spenser Theater (just North of Town but fantastic. They even have tours); and the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort/Casino, if you like to gamble and/or play golf. Of course during racing season there is the Ruidoso Downs Race Track.
