Last year my husband's parents purchased Marriott vacation club points (1500 I believe) for $30,000. When they told us about it, we weren't sure they quite understood how everything works. (We own DVC thru a resale contract and researched for about a year before buying.) They claim the maintenance fees are fixed and won't change. They were also excited to tell us my husband and his sister will inherit it and will need find a way to share. They are in their late 70's so I'm not sure how much use they will get out of it. We have no experience with Marriott. So what should we know? Will maintenance fees really stay the same forever? What is the ease of booking? Is this something we even would want to inherit? They also claim Marriott will buy it back for 50% of what they paid, but I'm skeptical of this.

Probably 2000 points if they paid full retail + closing costs. Perhaps more points if they were more knowledgeable. But not enough points to reserve a prime week at a Marriott timeshare, and you would have only half of that (although you can rent points from other owners on an "as needed" basis -- an excellent benefit)..

Maintenance fees are NOT fixed; you may count on them increasing ~5%/year. Currently ~$0.62/point + club fee of ~$225.

Points or weeks, MVC is not buying. Another poster recently wrote that MVC waived ROFR on a $0.75/point transaction.

And based on hundreds of other posts, we know that the salesman's representations to OP's parents were not in writing.

100% resale!!
DC trust points work just like DVC points where you don't have to pay extra to make a reservation, pay housekeeping fees or pay to add someone else to the reservation. If you vacation 7 days at a time, they aren't a good value compared to other methods. Don't get me wrong, DC trust points are a better value than DVC, meaning you get nicer accommodations for less $$ compared to DVC, but if you want the most bang for your buck, you need to own Wyndham resale points or a Marriott legacy 2 bedroom lock off deed that you can split into 2 weeks and trade it with II. That ends up costing $1100 ish a week for a 2 bedroom if you do it right. You won't get access to all Marriotts whenever you want that way, only what's deposited into II, it's just a cheaper compromise.

Resale Wyndham points will get you access to whatever DVC units get deposited into RCI. I don't mind AKV, OKW and SSR, so I use my Wyndham points to exchange into DVC. Only SSR is easy to get, the other 2 you have to have an open search for months and will sometimes get lucky. I only pay $1050 a week to stay in a 1 bedroom DVC unit though.

If I were you I would inherit it just to try it out because you don't have to pay for the $6,000 resale purchase price of the points and get a free II account that you don't get with DVC. I personally decided I don't want to own DC trust points because it's super easy to just rent from an owner on here that I trust for the cost of the maintenance fees. I've been contemplating Marriott the past few weeks myself (I own Wyndham) and have decided to just buy an every other year 2 bedroom lock off at Grande Vista and just exchange it within the Florida club or on II. If there's something that I want that I can't get with II, I can get it from a DC owner that doesn't want to travel that year.

The estimated number of points they own won’t get much unless used wisely and likely in shoulder or low season. However, if you are using your DVC unit and can add some nights on at a Marriott in the area there are some advantages like an extended stay and lower airfares.

Also keep in mind that you don’t have to inherit it even if your parents will it to you. You jus decline to accept that particular asset.

I would recommend doing more research here on TUG to learn more about the system, so you are as informed as possible. Also visit as many different MVC resorts as you can when you are in the area, so you get a sense of what they are like.

Best regards.

Mike
