I live here and am not going. They have road closings, and probably the largest there has ever been. I am staying home and watching it on my husband's big tv with friends.

I am not going. I live about 20 miles from DC. Someone I know, rented their living room for two nights, in my neighborhood, for $3000 for one person. That person will be sleeping on a couch.

Unless someone already has a reservation in hand within 2 hours of DC, it will be impossible to attend if you are travelling from outside the area.

I will watch history being made from the comfort, and safety of my home on TV.

So where will all the people be during the actual inauguration? Standing outside in the cold? I hope everyone can actually get where they want to without transportation problems, or difficulty seeing and hearing. Many will have spent a lot of money and may be disappointed, other than being able to say they were in DC Jan. 20.

Speaking of which: I have a 4-nite hotel res in Fairfax and am 99% sure I'm going to cancel, due to low temps + huge crowds + restrictions on things like backpacks + folding chairs.

If you're a frequent TUG poster and are interested in having this res transfer over to your name + your cc #, please PM me right away, maybe there's a way to coordinate. It's approx 8 mi from a metro stop, studio with kitchen - including tax adds up to about $700 total for 2 people for all 4 nights (arrive Sat, depart Wed), and they'll allow a 3rd person on a roll-away for add'l $10/nite.

I'm assuming this hotel would be willing to switch at this cost, but haven't asked yet.

DC Metro is practicing running 8 car trains. As if that is really going to help?

Philadelphia had a parade for the baseball team which drew 2 million on a perfect Fall day - swamped 2 different city subways (the Market Street and Broad Street), the Amtrak train system, the western Suburban train system, the NJ-Philly Patco High Speed train system, the Phila city bus system, the NJ Transit bus system, closed two bridges over the Delaware River .... people were still walking 5+ miles to home or car 4+ hours after the parade ended or went by their location. Many NEVER saw the parade as they didn't get into the city or were stuck intransit.

Have absolutely NO PLANS to be anywhere near DC in the cold winter weather,

JMHO,

Did it once

We did it for Papa Bush's inauguration and that one, with much smaller crowds, was bad. (Wasn't our idea. Out of town company came and wanted to go.) We even had tickets, but still it was terrible. Never again.

Rooms are available...

A lot of hotels are releasing rooms but most are requiring a 4 night minimum stay. I saw a Hilton Garden Inn in Arlington, VA for $269/night and a few other Choice Hotels all under $400/night.
