there are no politics or religion. There is just need, and the opportunity to help. One of the charities I gladly support is Samaritans Purse, headed by Franklin Graham (Billy Graham's son). Samaritans Purse is probably best known for its annual "Operation Christmas Child" effort to distribute more than 10 million shoebox gifts to children in disadvantaged regions of the world. Those shoebox gifts are gathered from churches throughout America.
But the organization's true mission is to provide disaster relief whenever and wherever natural disasters occur. This past weekend, Samaritans Purse set up a field hospital in the East Meadow of Central Park. Even atheists in NYC are thanking them for their courage and selflessness. (I read some of their comments on a blog sponsored by the Wall Street Journal this morning.)
In times of crisis, little is gained from pointing fingers of blame at who should have done what when. There will be plenty of time for post-crisis analysis.
The need is here now. The crisis is upon us. I would encourage any who are moved by their work to donate to Samaritans Purse today--or any other charitable organization like the American Red Cross--as our way of joining with the brave doctors and nurses and volunteers who are on the front lines in New York City.
