Yes, that scared me during our last trip. Our friends that stay on Maui for about 8 weeks during whale season were telling us about this disease in lettuce. Disgusting. I think I will stop buying locally grown lettuce. Maybe more canned veggies on Maui!

I would think cooked veggies may not be an issue, raw would be.

Yes if you cook your veggies well so that they kill the infection you should be fine. We eat salad every night so that we will just have to stay away from local lettuce. In December we were on Hawaii Island and got some really nice heads of local lettuce which apparently was OK. Local lettuce sometimes it is really nice and we love getting it, however, Sam's or Costco lettuce which comes from other places is safer.

If you take apart and separate the leafs of your locally produced heads of lettace in Hawaii and thoroughly scrub them in hot soapy water you should be ok.

Some how my original message was separated from the quote I was replying to. The quote was

“I think I will stop buying locally grown lettuce. Maybe more canned veggies on Maui!“

Since they were looking to canned veggies, I made the assumption they would be cooking veggies. Good point about Sam’s or Costco for lettuce. I would expect there could be some local produce there as well,

Since I am in NY right now there is no local lettuce and I don't think it is ever local at Sam's or Costco. When I was on the Island of Hawaii in Decmeber I did see some local Maui lettuce so you are correct.

We do break apart and separate the leaves and soak the lettuce with hot soapy water. However, if you try to scrub soft leaf lettuce all you will have left is colored water with no lettluce pieces!
