We stopped at In and Out for a cheap-o lunch today and noticed that they had some new t-shirts. I keep thinking they'd make great souvenirs for visitors to bring back home for themselves or teens, specially if they don't have any In and Out where they are. I just went to the website, and you can get them online, too! They also have children's sizes.

What did we have today? Irene has a cheeseburger with raw onions, tomato and sauce. Not too much of a challenge. I have a hamburger with a grilled "round onion," pickles, and sauce, "upside down." The "round onion" gets me a slice of onion, freshly grilled. Otherwise you get diced, pre-grilled onion. And "upside down" of course means switching the top and bottom buns.

We also had an order of well done fries. Nice and crunchy, and we hit a jackpot today, almost a double order!

All of this, including the t-shirt, was just over $17. You gotta love In and Out!

We are not usually fast food folks but we are now eating at In-N-Out once every 2 weeks or so. We do protein style (lettuce wrap), 3 by 2 (3 meat patties by 2 slices of cheese), tomato and raw onion but without spread, and share an order of well-done fries. All for under $13. Cheapest lunch we have, ever. YUM.

I enjoy In-N-Out, when I'm where they are. Sadly, I'm in NW Washington, and the closest In-N-Out to me is in Southern Oregon. About 500 miles away. :(

There is a Sonic about 40 miles away, but it is SO not the same. :)

No In-n-Out here either. Five Guys. Sonic. We have the furthest West Culvers. But no In-n-Out. Patience, James.

Dang-it. Now I'm jonesing for some In-N-Out burgers. Way to go. It's a steep airfare to Cali for a burger.

Meh. I've been to In-n-Out several times, and I'll take Five Guys, SmashBurger, or Freddies ALL before In-n-Out. To me, In-n-Out is a step above McDonalds or Burger King, but that's about it. I don't get the hype -- their marketing machine hasn't worked on me, I guess.

I've been to some five guys burger that were delicious and others that were inedible. I think a lot of it has to do with the location you're at. IMHO. YMMV

I've never thought In-N-Out was "all that", but it's impressive that one can get that quality for that price. Last Spring, we were leaving the Bay Area, and my kids wanted to hit In-N-Out one last time. We were road tripping, so everyone already had open drinks. We pulled into an In-N-Out and got 5 cheeseburgers and two orders of fries, which was enough for all 5 of us, and the total was something like $16.55 or $18.55. Feeding 5 people decent quality food for less than $20, sans drinks, is pretty impressive IMO.

Why upside down?

For many years (maybe 30), whenever I eat a hamburger I only eat half the bun. The top half of a hamburger bun is always better than the bottom, softer, seeds sometimes, etc. If I just turn the burger over so I have the top on the bottom I miss the sauce. Cheese on top doesn't factor, cause I don't do cheeseburgers. So if I get them to make it upside down I get the best part of the bun.

When I am at my local tavern I generally get a burger with either grilled onions or blue cheese. And since it is a knife and fork kinda place, not fast food, I have it sans bun and eat it with a fork.

Hmm, next time I'll have to try the "round onion" or the "upside down." DH won't know what I'm talking about if I order that way. We try to go at least once a month.

We have Culvers in Surprise, Arizona, and you're definitely a bit farther west than we are, but I don't think there are any more in the desert S.W. (We do have In-n-Out though.)

We have a Culver's in our own hometown of Thornton, CO! Love the burgers and the fries, too.

I like In-n-Out but I am kinda with Kurt on the burgers because we have so many great places to eat a burger in Denver

I really did love Raising Cane's in Vegas, though, and on Fern's wonderful recommendation on another thread. I will admit we ate there three times in six days. We shared the largest meal because I don't need that many fries. I have a gut that needs trimmin'.

Do you not have Raising Cane's in the Denver area? We have one up here in Ft. Collins. It is my favorite chicken place by a long shot!

Cane's is my favorite chicken finger place, too. I didn't get to Raising Canes very often because the one you went to was out of the way for me, but when we did go there, Irene and I would share a "Caniac," which is six chicken fingers, extra fries, cole slaw, Texas Toast, two Cane's sauces, and one 32 ounce beverage, certainly enough for two.

About six or eight months ago we got one much closer, and I'm eating there more often. Still not very often, cause I only average one fast food a week.

Oh, and maybe a Blaze Pizza. That's my new fave. They are not widespread in Vegas yet, but I think they will be. They have 11" (I think) pizzas. You walk a line and either choose one of their set pizzas, or get to have it made your way. You can choose from four sauces, a half dozen cheeses (including gorgonzola and olivini), almost a dozen meats, many veggies including three types of onions, one already cooked, and also chopped garlic. Then they cook your pizza, which only takes 2-3 minutes in a super hot oven (the crust is very thin). It is a huge hit around here. Irene and I each order a pizza, one beverage and one water. Why two? So we get what we want. Then we take half of each one home for the next day's lunch.

We have an In-N-Out 5 minutes from our house but haven't been there in a couple years. Over the years we have eaten at many different In-N-Outs in both Northern and Southern California. The first time we ate at one was in Hesperia CA about 25 years ago. I certainly wouldn't want a T-Shirt with their name on it.

They are OK but we are not really big fans of them or any fast food burgers though Steak and Shake isn't too bad. However we do like Hamburgers from Red Robin and the Aquarius Casino resort as well as a few other places. In fact there is an In-N-Out across the street from the Aquarius Casino resort in Laughlin NV but we have never been to it.

Though we've had Five Guys locally for many years, I'd never eaten at one -- until last night. I told my family afterwards that on a scale of 1-10, it was a 5. And that was being generous, so as to not offend my middle child who appreciated it more :) . I can honestly say that I won't go back unless it's at someone else's insistence. It wasn't awful, but when all you really do is hamburgers and fries, you should kick ass at it. And that certainly wasn't the case. The only thing that made my bacon cheeseburger noticeably "different" from any fast food joint burger was the amount of toppings that were on it.

I'll agree with you on the burgers (although the selection of toppings is good), but I think the fries are really good. Fresh cut with the skins and tasty. However, they are not as crispy as others so if that is a major criteria for you, I can certainly understand.

As for the burgers, I think Smash Burger has a better burger.

But both are better (but not cheaper) than In-n-Out.

Fries were ok. I fry my own at home, so my french fry standards are pretty high (and consequently, so now are my kids' :D ). But they were good. One of my pet peeves when it comes to burgers is to have them all smashed down when served. Five Guys was a big let down in that regard as it appears as though they prepare all of their burgers to go (?) so mine was wrapped in foil and compressed accordingly.

We've had a Smash Burger locally for some time as well, but I've yet to try it. WRT me personally, they're unfortunately located on the other side of town and very close to our only Buffalo Wild Wings. If I happen to be nearby and feel like grabbing a bite, I invariably go to BWW. I'm a wing junkie.........

If you order the In n Out fries "extra crispy" or "well done" they are much better. I've started ordering fries that way all the time now.

This thread made me crave for In and Out so I went there for lunch today. I ordered hamburger, protein style with "grilled round onion", and well done fries. I was told it's call "grilled whole onion" here :). Good lunch!

That assumes one likes crispier fries. To me, those are just over-cooked fries. In either case, I think 5 Guys fries are much better tasting than In-n-Out. To each their own!

My comment was in response to someone who posted about fries not being done enough. To each his/her own. :D And I love crispy fries. Can't stand the soft, soggy ones.
