If you originally placed a request with II that had both domestic and International destinations on it, then II will automatically charge you the International exchange fee, regardless of which sort of exchange actually confirms. That's always been their policy, and I've never known them to give a refund.

When requesting Marriott and non-Marriott resorts, I.I. will charge the higher fee of $139 rather than the Marriott to Marriott exchange fee of $99. If you're confirmed into a Marriott resort they will credit the CC used for the transaction the difference.

Thats not true according to II Terms and Conditions. It is detailed in "Marriott Internal Exchange Procedures and Priorities" under Item 7.

It states that with if an internal Marriott request has both Marriott and non Marriott resorts you must pay the regular exchange fee and no refund will be issued.

Maybe they make exceptions if you call and ask?

I'm trying to call in now and request a refund for my exchange into Surf Watch. Can't hurt to ask.

Edit: No dice. If you mix your requests, intl & domestic, non-Marriott & Marriott, whatever, you get charged the highest amount and whatever you get exchanged into, no refunds of the difference.

Once I placed an ongoing search with II that had both international and domestic locations and I was charged the international fee.

According to II, I can change the criteria of that request without losing my "place in line." As time went on, I modified the request to include other resorts and dates, and finally decided I was not going to get my exchange.

I called II to completely change my search for a different time frame and all domestic locations. I was told that even if the criteria were completely different than the initial request, the date initiated would still show as the date I entered the original search, which they said would be an advantage. I asked if I would get a refund for the difference in the exchange fee. I was told that I could, IF I completely cancel that search and initiate a new ongoing search (which of course would have a new date of initiation as that day.)

To further complicate things, I trade in II with Wyndham points, which has a weird process that many II reps and Wyndham reps don't understand. So unless I wanted to go through the whole process of canceling my request, hoping Wyndham put my points back, then "verifying" a deposit again with Wyndham, who only keeps track of II deposits in the "notes" on your account, I had to just stay with the international exchange fee. Knowing that all those steps would never occur without my monitoring every move with many phone calls and much aggravation, I left it as it was.

Back to the OP's question- if II charged you international mistakenly, then YES, you should get a refund. If you had international destinations requested, but confirmed a domestic location, then NO, I don't think they will refund. If you cancel your international search, you should get that fee refunded, then you can search again for domestic locations for that fee only.

It hasn't been recent. If I.I. has changed where they'll charge the full fee, even if they complete an internal exchange, I'll quit asking for anything other than a Marriott exchange with my Marriott weeks.

This have been a glitch I hit in their system. I've also booked Getaways that should have been charged taxes but didn't get that charge. Over the years there's been a few other little oddities I've seen when booking exchanges. Recently with DRI there was the amazing dissapearing AC that a few were able to confirm before I.I. yanked them from DRI members accounts. As with anything having to do with timeshare, it's best to alway ask questions first and pull the trigger (or make a request) second. Taking down names, dates and times doesn't hurt either.

For those who have multiple weeks banked, perhaps it would make sense to make two exchange requests? One request would be just Marriott (or just domestic) and the other would include the Non-Marriott (or international) locations. Of course for those looking for requests falling into all four of those categories things might get complicated.

My thinking is that when one request comes through, the other request could be cancelled. If the one that comes through is the one that costs less, then you will have in effect paid the lower price; if the higher priced exchange comes through first, then you'll have paid what you should have anyway (once the appropriate refund hits).
