As some may have heard, BMI airline is being purchased by BA / IAG, and the deal will formally be signed when it is approved by the European Commission. Once it is signed, the ability to use BMI miles on Star Alliance carriers will immediately be revoked from all reports. At some point, perhaps soon after, BMI miles will be converted to BA's Avios inches, which are far less valuable.

Reuters is now reporting the liklihood of EU Commission approval tomorrow, so it is almost the end of the line for using BMI miles at their great values - 4500 or 6000 miles each way for intra-Euope flights, for example. Of course, those may still be availible for a time using BMI's own routes, but partner availibility will be gone very shortly.

Sad to see BMI go. They have had a great ff program. :(

EU approval has been given, but they still need to finalize the seperate deals to get their BMI Baby and BMI Regional units sold. An internal memo quoted on FlyerTalk, now says that April 20 will be the signing day. That gives a few more weeks to burn miles.
