I made a reservation, had to get up at midnight Hawaii time to get it, paid the price, and was turned away anyway: "park is closed". Did not get a refund.

They weren't checking in January. Tourism to the Island must have made a dramatic return to normal.

It appears that reservations for 8/9 were released a little earlier than 11:50 PM or so HST 7/9. We set an alarm for 5:45 EDT 7/10, but parking spaces were already gone by the time we looked at 5:50. Does anyone know *exactly* when reservations are open? I don't mind waking up early in the morning Eastern, but I'd like to get as much sleep as possible!

Answer: the parking passes for 8/9 were released sometime between 6:10AM EDT and 11:30EDT on 7/10, because they were not there this AM, but they were when I compulsively looked just now.

Heading over to Ke’e early tomorrow for our 630-noon beach time. Plan to leave Princeville at about that time. The first caravan Leaves Hanalei to Princeville at 530am.

Do entry tickets via shuttle also sell out quickly or is it just for parking passes? Does the shuttle system work pretty well?

I want to be sure that I understand the current situation (mid-July).

We're planning to take the shuttle. As I understand, there are two key logistical hurdles. First is getting past the landslide and into Hanalei, the second is getting a reservation on the shuttle.

Regarding getting into Hanalei, Hawaii DOT has a schedule for when caravans will be escorted through the work zone. If I understand the schedule correctly :

  • Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri: First caravan service from 5:30 am - -7:45 am. If you don't make it through by 7:45, you're stuck until the next caravan time, at 1 pm - 2:30 pm. Returning it looks as if caravaning is continuous from 5:30 pm to midnight.
  • Wed (starting Aug 4), same as above except the mid-day caravan window will be 12:30 pm - 2 pm.
  • Saturday - after a 5:30 am to 8:00 am caravan period, caravaning occurs for 30 minutes each hour, starting on the half hour and going to the top of the hour. After 5:30 pm caravans are continuous until midnight.
  • Sunday caravaning is continuous from 5:30 am - midnight.
  • I assume that when the caravaning ending time occurs, they shut down access, even if cars are still queued up for a caravan.
Is that an accurate summary of how things are working now?

I was just in Kauai this past week and can only speak to bullet 1. We crossed to Hanalei around 6:45am and back to Princeville at 1pm. The morning crossing had very little wait - maybe just timing that traffic was going to Hanalei at that time. The 1pm crossing, traffic Princeville goes first so that took at least 25 minutes before the other side can go. 5:30 to 11pm only in the evening (not midnight.)

The crossing is supposed to be open the whole day Sunday (at least it was in July.)

We were able to book the shuttle to Haena the week we were in Kauai, but completely missed that the landslide limited access to the shuttle stop. The landslide access times are especially restrictive on weekdays, so you have to plan for both the shuttle time AND the landslide access time accordingly!

Is there a good place to have breakfast near the Ha'ena shuttle stop? Thinking about getting there early to get through the Hanelei highway caravan and then relax with breakfast.

We got take out here and enjoyed the meal @ Ha'ena (had to rush to catch the shuttle.) The wait was a bit long.
