If you are an owner renting from another owner, do you have to pay a deposit?

I just made my first rental off another owner and was wondering if you are still expected to make the deposit required at check-in or can you just call the Club Wyndham number and give your member number to tie the reservation to your account?

Yes you will be required to make a security deposit. No you can't tie a another owner's reservation that you are a guest on to your account.

If you are staying at Star Island their security deposit is $200.

Lame. I'm trying to get a free small WorldMark account so I can just use their Bonus Time inventory for Orlando/Daytona short stays. Worldmark still has it where you can rent credits from other owners, so a really small account works if you live on the East Coast. The HK credits Club Wyndham requires for a 1 bedroom suite is just stupid. Anything less than 500 sq feet should only cost 28 HK credits to clean in my opinion.

I don't understand the big deal about the security deposit. Isn't it just a "hold" on the credit card account. If I have to do this I just give them a little used card so the hold never affects me.

By the way, I've seen much larger holds on occasion after pumping gas.

In my case, I have just paid the entire amount in full.

I believe @cbyrne1174 was talking about the security deposit Wyndham takes when a guest checks in rather than a deposit to the lessor.

I rented from a VIP since my rental was only 12,000 pts but 63HK credits and it says that there's a $200 security deposit. They usually wave in for owners, but guests of owners have to pay it even if they are owners themselves. It's lame having to give a huge deposit, but still better than wasting a bunch of housekeeping credits on a 1 night stay.

If it like any other hotel or most other timeshare companies. They just swipe your credit card to place a hold for incidentals. Some places place much higher holds than others.

Yes, I thought that was just common practice whether you rent or own. I know hold amounts can vary by resort.

Star Island is a resort that doesn't waive it even for owners.

I'm a Wyndham owner. Recently stayed at Harbor Lights in San Diego and was told they only place a Deposit hold if you are parking a car @ $36/night. Now At Kauai Beach Villas and they place a Deposit hold of $150. They will charge taxes of approx $10/day at check-in out.

Never heard of this security deposit in all my stays at Wyndham. They used to ask for DL and CC. In recent trips, they didn't even want my CC just my DL. Is this just for guests?

It varies by resort.

A guest should always need to provide a credit card (on rare occasions I don't think they have). I really want them to. In my mind, it's an added reminder to a guest that they are responsible for damages and incidentals.

As far as for owners, in general, I think it matters whether or not fees may be charged. Good examples here parking or HI taxes. If for sure there will be charges, a credit card is needed. If charges are not going to be incurred, a resort may not take a credit card (however they still might). If they don't, you shouldn't be able to charge incidentals to your room. If you want to charge incidentals, you need to provide a credit card.

We just completed 5 Resort stays in the last month as owners and they all required a credit card deposit at check in. Two were in Hawaii, one California, one Florida and one Tennessee.

Exactly correct. If there are taxes or any merchandise (food & bev, spa, etc) on-site that can be charged to the room, a CC must be on file. Failure to do so would be due to a very poor employee.

Virtually all timeshare operations will also require a CC for a 'damage' deposit just like a hotel.

I checked into a Marriott Courtyard last week using my Chase CC free night. They did NOT ask for a CC deposit. I was quite surprised.

I always present 3 cards, my DL, my CC, and my Platinum Membership card. We were in 3 resorts in TN, one in Wisconsin Dells, one in Chicago, 2 in TX last summer. In most cases, they just take the DL and decline the other two. Perhaps because there are no taxes or there is nothing to charge to the room! Maybe in TX, they took the CC for parking/valet charges! But nothing called a 'security' deposit to pay for damages! I must pay closer attention from now on!

As an owner you are responsible for damages. My understanding is they will come after you, if necessary. Thus no credit card for owners (unless for incidentals).
