I guess that's my question.

If I sell my timeshare can I stay with RCI?

I know if I have a points RCI membership I was told no but I can not seam to get a defining answer when selling my weeks timeshare. Does anyone know for sure? Thank you in advance.

You have to own a timeshare to be a member of RCI. So if you don't own some form of a timeshare you cannot maintain membership.

Yes, if you sell your timeshare, as long as you pay your dues, you can remain a member. I am proof of that. I sold the only timeshare that they know about. I haven't deposited anything with them for maybe 10 years.

If your RCI membership is part of, and paid for, through your timeshare membership - RCI will find out when you sell your timeshare.

If your RCI membership is a private Acct. that you pay for directly - RCI will not know when you sell your timeshare, unless you tell them, as long as you keep paying your yearly membership fees.

Thank you so much. Now I understand. As long as I don't tell them I sold it, it is fine. I bought it off eBay.

SFX has also been known to allow people to join without any TS on their account.

I just checked an old RCI account that was affiliated through my Wyndham account and it is still active, even though I sold all of my Wyndham holdings early last year. I haven't tried to book anything though, so they'd probably catch it then.

The same theory applies to any exchange company.

Not so...

You have to own a timeshare to be a member of RCI. So if you don't own some form of a timeshare you cannot maintain membership.

While it is correct that ownership at a RCI-affiliated resort is necessary to initiate RCI membership, many people maintain their RCI (weeks) membership for years and years after selling off the RCI facility ownership that initially made them eligible for RCI membership in the first place, while owning at no other RCI-affiliated resorts.

RCI usually doesn't know --- or much care, apparently. If someone is willing to continue to pay RCI membership fees just to have access to Last Minute offerings and / or Extra Vacations, RCI is clearly more than happy to continue to take their money and allow them to do so.

Inadvertent duplicate of above post voluntarily removed. Not even sure how I manage to somehow "double post" while merely attempting to correct typos.

as already answered

I am late to the party on this one

Some resorts I am not sure how they would verify you sold your timeshare. My resort for instance chooses to handle all RCI transactions directly so there is no linking of my timeshare to the RCI account since the company wants to validate every dang deposit I do.

Maybe on the resorts that want to validate the deposit they have a way to track these not sure but none the less

I was wondering about this for my Mom. So, if she sells her TS, she can keep her RCI weeks membership? She has 200+ TPUs, so she doesn't want to lose these. I assume that she also could transfer those TPUs to my RCI account, if she couldn't keep her RCI weeks membership?

I'm sure your Mom's account and TPUs would remain intact if she sold her TS. I've watched this over the years here on TUG and there have been many who no longer own TS who maintain accounts and just shop for getaways, etc. (Heck, RCI still makes money if she should exchange the TPUs or if she rents a week from them.)

As an example, I sold one of my TS (not the only one, though) and RCI kept calling and asking me to deposit it--I told them repeatedly that I no longer owned it. They still ask me to deposit it and it still shows up on my account.

I tried to have a friend's TPUs transferred to me and RCI said they do not permit that.

hmmm. I think RCI now allows transfers of RCI points. Maybe they don't allow TPUs?

per RCI website from FAQ (after someone has sold their TS ownership):

What about my unused deposits?
That’s up to you! If you choose to keep your existing RCI membership, you can choose to keep your unused deposits. If you are transferring your entire RCI membership, then your deposits would also be transferred to the new owner.

Additional Inside Tip: Did you know that you can keep your RCI membership and continue to take advantage of Last Call VacationsSM and Extra VacationsSM getaways? You’ll still receive member pricing as well as the ability to book online and save even more! Click here for more information on Last Call Vacations, and here for more information on Extra Vacations getaways.

No RCI expert here and we haven't used RCI (...or even belonged in a while, for that matter) but I believe the above observation is exactly correct.

AFAIK, RCI has always allowed the transfer of RCI Points (I gave away many remaining RCI Points myself to several other TUGgers in years past), but I don't believe that TPU's are transferable outside of their account. TPU's can of course be combined within an account, but AFAIK are not transferable to another, different account.

That being said, OP could surely "work with" his/her mother and her account in order to effectively utilize those "stored" 200 TPU's. It might mean having to make a reservation and then subsequently obtain a Guest Certificate in another name, but the additional step and the additional GC expense would certainly seem preferable to just letting those existing 200 TPU's sit dormant and unused, no?

Just make sure Mom's RCI membership / account remains active and uninterrupted by paying the RCI weeks membership fees when up for renewal.

TPU's = trading power units = the trading value of timeshares in the RCI weeks exchanging system.

So sorry. New here. What is AFAIK and is there a dictionary here to look up these terms? Thank you in advance.

AFAIK isn't a timeshare term - it's a common internet/text abbreviation for "as far as I know."
