If Delta lowered fares, is there a certain time this would occur? Possibly right after midnight? I am SHOCKED at airfares to the Caribbean and can't believe people would or can pay these prices. Thanks.

The airlines' yield management systems can and do change fares at any time of the day or night. They sometimes change fares simply to test what the reaction will be to changes, but usually to ensure they derive the maximum fares they believe practical on any specific routes.

We have to get used to much higher fares. Most of the U.S. airlines have been in tough financial shape, collectively losing billions (yes, with a "b") of dollars annually for a couple of years. Further, virtually all U.S. airlines have announced significant cutbacks in the number of flights they will operate, generally starting in October. Even with higher fares, the lesser number of flights should keep demand for available seats high.

I thought I heard once that airlines used to try to increase fares Wed-Thur-Fri. If other airlines didn't seem to match, come Monday, they'd rollback to the previous fares.

However, with so much upheaval in the airline industry, I'm not sure if what may have been standard practice 1-2 years ago still applies today.

The following info from farecompare.com ...

Domestic airfare updates are published three times per day Mon through Fri and once per day on Sat and Sun (Mon-Fri 10am/noon/8pm, Sat 8pm, Sun 6pm EST). It can take 2-4 hours for travel agencies and online sites to roll out the updates.

International fares to/from North America are updated 5 times a day.

Hopefully, some LCC (i.e. Southwest, Jet Blue) or competitor will put the same route on sale. Then they'll drop fares for a number of seats, until that capacity has been sold or time is short enuff to snare $$ from latecomers.
