If Cities return to normal will the public ride subways?

If major cities return to normal do you think people will ever feel comfortable and confident to again get around using the subway system?

Or, do you think major American cities will experience severe traffic problems because folks refuse to ride the public subway system due to social distancing concerns (and instead insist on driving their car to work or shop)?

I think some people will ride immediately but not everyone. It will probably increase in phases. I think within a couple of years, mass transit will be back to pre-covid levels.

Hopefully people will learn to wash their hands and stay home when sick.

They have to. In most dense cities, there simply isn't any other way. I suspect most people will re-adjust relatively quickly, just as has happened in pacific rim countries that have already gone through e.g. SARS.

I think the USA would be well advised to follow the lead of some Asian cities, where people wear masks, maintain social distancing, and they wash their hands a lot. Now that "everyone" knows what it's like to wear a mask, they should continue it. I know I'll be carrying hand sanitizer with me, and a mask, even after this virus has passed. Better to be prepared, I think.

Maybee bike lanes/riding will be an alternative for some.
The place I ride the subway is when we visit NYC. No way would I ride a bike there! And if I'm traveling I don't have a bike with me anyway.

Riding the NYC subway was a horror before this happened. And NJ Transit pretty scary in late evening. I went out shopping today for the first time in weeks...I have to say wearing a mask for three hours straight (BJs checkout line had about 50 people waiting) was pretty daunting and claustrophobic for me. Makes me very grateful that I no longer need to commute. I think all public transportation should have mask requirements going forward. But trying to enforce it will be problematic, as any frequent subway user knows.

I’ll be wearing one out in public for as long as is necessary.

Right, i am talking about local NY commuters not foldable bikes on boats or in car trunks/hatchbacks. But thanks for your input.:)

Even if I lived there I wouldn't use a bike to commute. I didn't use one in California and I could have ridden on a bike trail to get to work. :D

Also I'm a terrible bike rider, and back then I was wearing a dress and heels to work most of the time.

Right, Luanne when I used to ride my motorcycle to work I had to change at work. So yes clothes can be a challenge when riding.

¿Type of Mask and purpose? I laugh every time I see a person driving a car by themselves with a home made cloth mask.

They are riding the NYC subway now, without masks. So why do we think they wouldn't after the quarantimes?

As of today they will have to wear a mask in NYC when on the subway.

I wouldn’t get on any public transportation after this. Especially in LA. They do not do thorough cleaning at all.

Of course people will ride the subways/trains. We have to. 90% of big city mass transit riders ride because they have no other option.
That's why I pray they get this pandemic under control with proper testing, precautions, enough masks, etc, before they open big cities back up for work.
Not to do so is unconscionable. A sin really.

In New York City and Washington, DC do you have a choice?. You can ride a train and be at point A to point B in minutes or you can be stuck in auto traffic for hours..

And in the biggest cities, parking is easily $25+ per day. Most workers can’t afford this

Also some, if not many, people in these cities don't even own a car. Too expensive to garage.

Most will have no choice as it is their only mode of transportation to get to work. In major cities like NYC many do not own cars.
