I see many ads about getting out of timeshare contracts. A lawyer friend told me to stop paying timeshare fees and nothing negative will happen. The company will eventually stop bothering you. I own my timeshare and can't give it away.

I wouldn't necessarily say nothing will happen. You might face a bunch of annoying collection calls and letters. You will possibly face a hit to your credit score or rating. However, damage to your credit score in situations like these are rare.

TBS, you are correct to not respond to any of these ads for companies that claim they can get you out of your timeshare.
