Pat,

You'll have to provide the name of the email client you are using.

If it's web-based (i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), you have nothing to worry about. You can log into it from anywhere.

It it's Outlook (or something similar) then we can get it transferred over. You'll have to provide the name of which one it is.

Okay, I'm going to embarrass myself over how simple and non-techy this is, but it works for me. Sit down at your old computer. Go through your emails and forward the ones you want to keep to yourself. Open them on the new computer. Done.

If you do that, be sure that your old computer is set to NOT check for email every so often - otherwise you will keep receiving your own forwards!

Another issue to consider with that plan, is that you will be sender of all the emails - so if you want to search for an old email from someone, it'll be hard to do.

I must be really stupid. That's extremely complicated. The last time I got a new computer I remember it being extremely easy.

Last time did you use the "Files and Settings Transfer" feature to set up your new computer?

If you do that, all of your mail stores should come over to your new computer, along with your browser settings, your desktop, everything in your "My Documents" folder, and a lot of other personalized stuff.

All I remember importing is the email. I used the Import button in OE. That's all I remember since it was 5-6 yrs ago.

Ok - using your old computer, open your e-mail program and look for an "Export" command. It will probably be on the "File" menu. Export all of your messages to a folder that is in a place you can get to on your new computer.

Then go to your new computer. Open the e-mail program there and select "Import". As with the "Export" command, it should be on the "File" menu. When prompted navigate to the folder to which you previously exported, select your message store.

Should be that simple.

Export all of your messages to a folder that is in a place you can get to on your new computer.

That part might be difficult. A slight alteration:

After you Export from your old email on your old computer, you can then copy the folder with the exported email to a flash drive (one of those little USB gizmos).

Then remove the drive from the old computer, insert it into the new computer, and tell the new computer's email program to Import it from the folder on the flash drive.

I had the same problem too when DH bought the new HP computer with Vista. There were no instructions anywhere or I missed them but I found them here and they were easy to follow because it worked. :)

Thanks everyone for your help. I will try to do this later. My old computer is now in my 14 yr old grandson's room. As soon as he gets up, hopefully sometime today, I will try it.

outlook or outlook express to windows mail?

If it's outlook (not express) to windows mail it may be more complicated. That's effectively a downgrade. I think windows mail is the new name for outlook express' successor in windows vista. outlook is a decent mail/message program that's part of MS Office, and has very little in common with outlook express except for the common part of the name.

That's good information to have David. :) I missed that Pat was asking from Outlook to Windows Mail and I gave her instructions from Outlook Express to Windows Mail so your information should be better.

That shouldn't be a problem. In Outlook you export to a .PST file (That's the only real functional option for a message store.)

In Windows Mail when you start the Import Wizard, you specify that you are importing from Outlook. (The Wizard gives separate options for Outlook and Outlook Express.) You then navigate to the .PST folder and with that, the import should go cleanly.

Thanks for adding the clarification. When I said to store the messages ''in a place you can get to on your new computer", I had in mind that included putting the information on a flash drive or a disc. But I can see where that nuance might not have been clear.
