breakers

From a peak about 6 years ago of about 120,000 in the 5-6 week period, the total has been dropping over the years to about 40,000 last year. They said they expected that many again this year but I am guessing more like 20,000 tops--over the whole timeframe. Many have gone to Acapulco, Padre Island, Mazatlan and Los Caobos--or been rerouted south to the Riviera Maya.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya seem to be at or near the top of any list of destinations for Spring Break 2006. MSNBC ranked them #2 and #1 just yesterday.

Right now there are a lot of cheap packages available for Cancun so that might attract a lot of students at the last minute?

Doubt it

I just got back from 10 days in Cancun, and saw relatively few Spring Breakers (although the peak time is yet to come). The word I've been hearing, is that the college kids are going elsewhere this year. The word is out on campuses that the "good" bars in Cancun are still closed, places like Senor Frogs, Carlos & Charlies, etc ... and many of the really inexpensive small hotels are still not open. And abouthalf of the beach area has not been restored yet. I'll bet Spring Break volume ends up at something like 20% of a normal year.
