We just purchased our first week at NCV and we're already thinking we want another.

How long after you bought your first Marriott week did you buy a second one?

I don’t own Marriott but will share my experience. I purchased an HGVC affiliate resale in 2012 after researching and reading on TUG for a year and a half. My next purchase was a resale DVC in 2018 so six years between the two.

Have you been able to use your week yet? My suggestion is to take it slow because your preferences may change as you become familiar with timesharing and the resorts. You could always supplement your wish for another week by renting from TUG Members. This gives you a chance to “test drive” different resorts and locations without being locked in.

We rented for several years before purchasing (secondary market) our first week in 2007 at Marriott Desert Springs Villas I. We chose that location because we love to vacation there and it's an easy day trip from home. For the first many years, I would split our 1 week and get 2 weeks trading back into Villas I or II every year. We did for a long time, until I discovered the power of trading into all of the other wonderful Marriott properties that are available through Interval. We stayed at all of the MVC properties in Palm Desert, also Newport, Tahoe, Vegas...and then we ventured out to Hawaii, and haven't looked back. Up until COVID, we have been enjoying our 1 week split into 2 weeks mostly in Hawaii and mostly at MOC. We just purchased (secondary market) our second week this year, so it's been 13 years between first and second. We are so much more experienced now with the different options, when to reserve, how to trade, what is a re-trade, etc. There are so many very smart people in this group that have helped with great advice. If you have a question, chances are someone already asked it, so scan the forums for lots of learning opportunities. I would say manage what you have for now, see how it works, rent another week if you really need more time, and then see how you feel after awhile of doing that.

We purchased our first Marriott week in 2007 and then bought another one in 2009 (resale). I still have both and waited as long as I did for the second one because it is hard to find fixed week units. I already owned a different timeshare at the time (Worldmark) which I also love and have a specific use for.

Congrats on your purchase and good luck with the hunt — it is easier to buy these things than sell them, but they certainly have been terrific for me and my family!

Best,

Greg

About 2 minutes - haha.
We were staying on a preview visit at Club Son Antem back in the early 2000s when we bought our first week there along with a 2nd week at the new Playa Andaluza resort which we only saw for the first time a year later.
All our other purchases were spread over the following 15 years or so.

Initially we bought a 2BR EOY in 2003 and were told if we purchased the other half within a year, we would only have to pay the difference between the EOY and an annual week (instead of paying for 2 EOYs, which cost more than one annual week), so we did. Just within a year in 2004.

Then we bought a 3 BR a couple of years later, thinking ahead to the future when we hoped to have grandchildren some day (which we now do!)

While sitting in the Airport on my way home from HHI I was reading the Island Packet, HHI's newspaper. In it were two full page ads, one for Marriott's pre-construction Sabal Palms and one for Kemmon Wilson's Holiday Inn TimeShare. I debated who to call but finally picked up the phone and called Marriott and bought a Sabal Palms Week sight unseen. I don't remember how much later (maybe a year or so) I received a solicitation in the mail from Marriott to buy a pre-construction Harbour Club Week. Again I picked up the phone and bought sight unseen. Maybe a year or two later the same thing happened again. This time it was a solicitation in the mail from Marriott to buy a pre-construction Heritage Club Week. Same result. I picked up the phone and again bought sight unseen. Buying pre-construction helped when I decided to sell as I pretty much recouped all my costs...

Sometime later I bought a Monarch Crown Suite Week resale. This was the best TS purchase I ever made. Not only did we get 5 or 6 years usage out of this spectcular unit but when I sold I made a substantial profit on the sale...

For us it was a couple of years. First was a trading unit at Harbour Pt. then we bought a Platinum week at Grande Ocean to use. We later sold the HP week 35 as it did not trade as we'd hoped.

Our first was resale in 2006. Went to Marriott presentation visits in 2000 and 2001. It just was not until later that we purchased with cash. It is not recommended to finance timeshare purchases. Our 2nd was three years later in 2009. Our motivation was to trade #2 while using #1. Both are driving distance from home and a place we like to go - Hilton Head Island. Take time to understand your use patterns and preferences and ENJOY!

Bought Orlando in 1998, traded for Kauai 2000, added points 2015, loved it always. Currently difficult to find ways to use all points, but glad to have this problem

We had traded a couple of independent resort units we owned from 1985 to 2010 and traded into Marriott resorts whenever we could. We finally decided to buy our first Marriott in 2010 (DSV1). Then we bought an EOY at Ko Olina in 2013 after having traded into the resort a couple times. We haven’t regretted it one bit and enjoy our trips. We have added other resorts and some DC points since then.

If you decide to buy another one make sure to consider alignIng the seasons (Platinum and Platinum, etc) if you think you would ever want to reserve back to back weeks. In that case you can make a reservation at 13 months out instead of 12 months. You may not plan to do that, but it’s something to consider. There are so many great resorts to choose from it can be hard to pick just one other. That’s how we ended up with so many.

Happy hunting!

Best regards.

Bought a HVC retail in Las Vegas in 2000, rescinded after I found TUG. Bought two Harbour Club Weeks resale and a Vail 'resale' via Marriott circa 2002-2003. Used all three to trade to Hawaii until 2017. Sold the Harbour Clubs in mid-2000s. Got tired of the II trade unknowns and committed to Maui with my first 2BR OF resale in 2017. Then got hooked on fixed weeks and things went a bit out of control in trying to build a winter string in the same unit. Finally have what I want and slowly thinning the collection. ;-)

Bought my first (Mexico) in 2006. 12 years later bought DC points retail followed by two MGV weeks and two SVV weeks about a year later. Just closed on additional DC points resale that were basically free minus the junk fees.

We bought our first from Marriott in 1999 and then added. When the Destination program began we bought enough points to link the weeks and points at the Chairman’s level. When you first buy you want more. But remember two rules: You buy for access - not future appreciation: you may get your money back if you buy resales, but there’s no guarantee. And make sure that when you buy that you can afford the annual maintenance fees...which will rise over time. That said we have enjoyed the program and rarely had a problem with finding what we wanted, given access to the 13 month booking window. With lower point totals you may be disappointed...though if you know someone with higher status you can transfer your points to them and they can book in your name. They then notify the property in advance of arrival that you will be the ones using the unit.
One other point: If you buy a week you could face an assessment if the property faces a large loss not fully covered by insurance. Our weeks are oceanfront properties and got hit once for several thousand dollars.

5 minutes.
................that was in 1998.
...........................................then a 3rd week 5 minutes after that.

Then another year for # 4............then 6 months for #5.
Then a few years for resales to begin (finally wised up),
whereupon we bought 5 resales over time, up until 2017 when we had accumulated 10 Marriotts (where the Marriott buying came to an abrupt halt).
During the last 8 years of that period (2009-2017) we also purchased another 6 non-Marriott resales.
It's been a wonderful thing.
Enrolled 6 eligible weeks cheaply, total = 17,800 available DC points......no need to ever buy points......pure dumb luck.

I bought my second one about a year after the first one and then my third right after that. That's it for me. I did buy some extra points to get me to Executive which gave me a ton more flexibility. I'm done (I think)

1st was 1994, then I bought a pre-construction in 2001, added an every other year in 2007 and then an every other year plus enough points to make Chairman in 2013. All from the developer. No regrets . Average price per converted point - about $ 7 per 13300 total points. Maintenance fee, inclusive of Interval International was about 51 cents per point average for 2020. I probably get 30% destination point discount on at least half of our stays for the past 6 years. Makes it seem like we have over 15000 Destination Points. On the downside, we typically finance and take about 7 years to pay down the loans. That probably translates to our acquisition costs being closer to $10 a point when considering the interest.

1 year after purchasing an Ocean Watch sight unseen in 2006, we bought a EOY Vegas/Arizona package. In hindsight, I wish we would have bought more units at OW or HHI instead. No regrets tho.

We own 5 MVC weeks and no DC Pts. It was 6 years between first and second purchases, 15 yrs in total between all weeks.

2002: #1: Grande Vista (Sight unseen)
2008: #2: Grande Vista (Enabled 13 month booking)
2011: Enrollment: GV Weeks in DC Pts Program (II Exchange Savings)
2017: #3-#5: Ocean Pointe, Maui Ocean Club, Ko Olina (Places we wanted to own long term)

No plan to purchase DC Pts (too pricey).

No immediate plan to purchase more weeks (max for what we can use currently), but maybe someday.

We bought our first timeshare in 1980! We bought our 2nd one in 1981 over the phone. In 1984 we bought at Harbour Pointe in Hilton Head when it was under construction. Marriott took it over in 1988 or so when the original developer went bankrupt. We then bought Grande Ocean pre construction, we were founding owners. Over the years we have bought and sold timeshares but since Surfwatch was a blueprint we have owned a 3 bedroom there and in 1999 we bought 3 weeks at the Aruba Ocean Club! Actually we also own 3 weeks at the Royal Resorts in Mexico since 1992.
