And to really confuse things, all Canadian airport codes start with a Y and often, but not always, one or two of the remaining letters will stand for the city name (e.g. - YVR (Vancouver), YYC (Calgary), YOW (Ottawa), YHZ (Halifax)).

Toronto is one of the exceptions. The main airport today (Toronto Pearson International) was not always the main airport. In the 1930's when the codes were assigned it was a relatively small, auxiliary airport in the suburb of Malton, so it was towards the bottom of the selection list and was assigned the code YYZ. The original Toronto airport (now known as Toronto Billy Bishop) is a short-haul commuter airport, since it is right downtown and too small for other than turboprop and small jet aircraft. It still has the original Toronto airport code of YTZ.
