I had a request in for a particular week at a particular resort. This morning I happened to be looking at some other destination to exchange into using a different unit when I came upon the very unit for which I had a request first.

In other words, my request first was not honored. The very property - same size unit and week - were there for anyone to take while my "request first" unit sat unmatched. I quickly took that unit and booked my exchange.

How could my "request first" be ignored? I booked the unit myself using the very unit I had used to put the original request in.

II amazes me!

Basically it was just deposited at that time. We have found that deposits go in to general exchange inventory for at least a few minutes before they are swept up and held for the overnight match process. SO it is still quite possible that this unit would have been swept and matched to your request tonight. Of course, it is also possible that there was someone with higher trade power wanting the same week and you snatched it from them.

This happens alot especially during flexchange, 60 days or less.
I never rely on my ongoing request and do frequent searches in addition :)

Was there a difference in unit size from your unit, and the matched unit?

It appears that the ongoing request match process runs only one time during the night. It seems to me that only leftovers (that were not snatched up during the daytime), get matched up with requests during the nightly process.
It is said that some weeks appear momentarily when they are deposited, then get pulled off for potential use in the nightly cycle.
When one has an ongoing search, it is wise to still check during the daytime for the same exchange.

This happened to me and i called II after I grabbed the week. I was told by my contact (not just a CSR, someone who contacted me after I sent a letter to the CEO) that there is a glitch in the system that they are trying to fix. Here's how it works:

You put in your request and get on a list with other people who want the same thing.

If someone deposits a week or cancels a week that they got through an exchange, it first goes into the "general pool" for a short period of time (don't recall how long, but I think I was told a few minutes).

Then, it is given to the person at the top of the list.

So, in my case, since I just happened to see it during the few minutes it was in the "general pool", I snagged it from someone who was above me on the list. Basically, I got lucky and someone else got screwed. I was told they are working on a fix for this.

So, moral of the story, keep checking even though you have an ongoing search.

It is possible that you were at the top of the list anyway. You never know. It doesn't go through the list until the middle of the night. Better to snag it while you see it, because as you say you could get lucky and someone else gets screwed.

And more revelations about the incredibly professional modern back-end systems of timeshare related businesses. But we should all trust that inventory is doled out as they promise...

And I hope they don't muck with it too much..... Being able to work the system is a good thing for the motivated. IMHO

Nope, my contact checked and there were a few names above me.

I am starting to think much about how Interval's computer system works is urban legend and supposition. :ponder:

We have been told (authoritatively, I thought) in other TUG postings that there is no time sequencing in the "List," that everything goes by trading power.

So who is right...you or those earlier posters?

It could be that the "contact" meant that there were other people with higher trading power than them.

If this is a general rep, I don't think they would have this kind of information available to them. I don't even know if they can see who all is requesting for the same property. They have a hard enough time telling my why I can't see a week with a studio when I can with a 1BR. It is all about trading power, but they don't even seem to comprehend that when I have talked with them.

I actually wasn't aware of this. Can anyone point me to these other threads?

Also, during the Flexchange period (i.e., 59 days or less before check-in), trade power no longer counts, correct? So, let's suppose several II members start ongoing searches for the same desired resort. The II members would have to start the searches before the Flexchange period, but if the searches didn't match, they would continue into the Flexchange period. Once Flexchange starts, how does II determine which search has the highest priority?

I thought it still rely on the trading power even within the flex time. And the unit size counts, too. is this correct?

My understanding is that during Flexchange, any week can trade for any other week online, subject to Marriott and Starwood preference periods (which are shortened during Flexchange) and quality filters (which are relaxed during Flexchange.) However, I have no idea how ongoing searches are prioritized during Flexchange.

Can anyone weigh in on this?
