Before you pay an upfront fee to someone to "take your timeshare off your hands," please consider giving your timeshare away to a private individual who would like to own it.

Why?

-You can give it away yourself for nearly no cost.
-You can control the transfer process to make sure it is truly transferred out of your name.
-You won't have to deal with companies that may or may not be Legit.
-You can transfer it to a private individual who will be happy to have it for their own use.
-You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you ended your ownership legally and ethically.

There are TWO places on TUG where you can give away your TS's for free - you want to post Ads in BOTH locations, because they are different locations, with different audiences.

There are other cheap and free sites on the internet, as well - I use Craigslist and Redweek.

1) TUG Marketplace - the only cost is your TUG membership - $15 (List it for $1 and it will automatically go in the Bargain Basement Ads.)

2) Bargain Deals (a subforum here on the TUG Bulletin Board) - Totally FREE! - just write a simple post with all the pertinent info. In your post, include the following info.:
-resort name
-unit size
-season owned
-maintenance fee
-current reservations​

To make it more attractive I would:

1) Pay for the current maintenance fee and possibly next year's, and don't ask for reimbursement.

2) Offer to pay for the title transfer/closing - inexpensive transfer/closings are usually less than $200 - ask for recommendations on TUG. The closing company will walk you through the whole thing - you don't have to know how to do a title transfer yourself.

3) Reserve a popular holiday week for the new owner

4) Here is the CRITICAL step that most people miss - come back to to your post once a week and bump it with new info. to keep it on the main page. (When you add a new post to your original thread, it automatically "bumps" your thread to the top of the page where it will be more visible.)​

*** You don't have to know anything about title transfers - that is why you use a reputable transfer company. All you have to do is post an Ad, and find someone who wants it. Once you have a taker, the title transfer company will take over the process and walk you through it. They will provide the contract, communicate with the buyer, prepare the new deed, collect required signatures, and record the deed with the local recorder's office, and resort.

There are two places on TUG where you can give away your TS's for free (no charge for the Ads.) There are other cheap and free sites on the internet, as well.

We initially joined TUG in 1998. When we purchased two timeshares with Pahio (Bali Hai eoy and Kaeo Kai every year. I have developed severe medical condition in 2008 (metastatic breast cancer). We are unable to maintain our maintenance fees due to dr bills. Is there any way we can get rid of them before next Aug fees are due? If there is any way we can cover the cost of this years fees? Any help is appreciated.

On Craigslist, you need to create a Craigslist Acct., create 3 different Ads with different titles and wording, and rotate them every 3 days. You don't have to rewrite the Ads - if you create an Acct. they will be saved in your Acct. and you can just delete the oldest one, and repost a new one, every 3 days.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T PAY ANYONE A LARGE UPFRONT FEE TO RENT OR SELL YOUR TIMESHARE - THAT IS ALWAYS A SCAM!

Inherited Timeshare

My sister and I inherited my parent's timeshare and we are in the process of researching how to give it away.
I see in your information a resource for handling the title transfer. What other closing costs are involved with this type of transaction?
We had an appraiser go out to the property last week and have received that information and we have the deed.
My parents had this timeshare for years and we never have been there and are unable to use it. We have very basic knowledge of the timeshare program so any help we can get will be appreciated!

A quarter ownership is not really a timeshare. Timeshares are sold by the week. I think I'd check with several local real estate agents and see if there is any local market.

Is Northslope in Monroe County, PA near Tannersville? If so, it is next door to Camelback Ski Area. And near the Mt Airy Lodge & Casino.Don't count on the gamblers as a source of rentals; skiers are more likely.

Yes, Northslope is in Monroe County. I know skiing is popular in that area. What about golf?
My sister and I have not been to the unit so we are unfamiliar with what is up there. I went to Mt. Airy Lodge on my Senior class trip in the 70's so that is all the experience I have LOL!

See my suggestion in post #1 - it is listed as item 2 in the post.

You should call the resort management directly and as them if the resort has a transfer fee.

Getting Rid of a Westgate Timeshare

First, let me thank all of those who have been so helpful in posting information on this site.

I HAD a timeshare at Westgate Vacation Villas. It was a 1 bedroom. My daughter and I no longer could afford it so I started the resale process. After several calls to Westgate and speaking with everyone there, I found a person who was willing to present our offer of turning over the interval to Westgate for nothing as we were ready to use your site to give it away. Now this took nearly a year but as of June 2 Westgate is now the proud owner of the interval at NO cost to us. At the beginning of this time consuming process all fees were current.

I do not know if other developers are as helpful but Westgate Vacation Villas were actively selling intervals so this in fact just got returned to their inventory. All I can suggest is persistence in contacting the company and throwing yourself on their mercy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It just continues prove that owners do not need to pay a Post Card Company or charity thousands of dollars to take a timeshare off their hands.

I contacted my resort at Vacation Village at Parkway in Kissimmee and they said they currently don't have a deed back program and I would have to find a resale company. Sending me to the scammers!

You registered on this board just today, but you have already posted twice in different threads. Both of your posts were to extoll the virtues of a company using a business model most of us believe to be fraudulent.

You posted no financial details of your deal with them (other than that you think their fee was "reasonable").

The only detail that you did post -- that the resort sent you a certified letter as you describe above -- is something none of us have ever heard of in literally thousands of transactions.

Why should I (or anyone) believe you?

Contract

I feel silly for asking this, but if I am giving away a timeshare, does there need to be a contract between myself and the recipient? Or can we go straight to the title transfer, resort transfer, etc.?

Whether you use a contract or not it up to you and the new owner - the county recorder's office and the TS title office won't ask to see it.

I have gotten two free TS's from Tuggers. For one we just did the basic title transfer and for the other the owner emailed me a basic contract that she copied from another contract.

I was worried about doing that for fear they would sue me for the 2012 fees. Did they agree to take it back or did you just do a quit claim deed?
