Just to add. Policing during Colonial America was very informal and in fact, based on a for-profit and private system that employed people part-time. Towns would have volunteers sign up for a certain day and time, mostly to look out for fellow colonists engaging in prostitution or gambling. In fact, Boston started one in 1636 with New York following in 1658 and Philadelphia created one in 1700. The very first publicly funded, organized police force with officers on duty full-time was created in Boston in 1838.

If we look back and consider the definition of public order, which police officers were charged with maintaining, it really depends on who you ask.
