Hotel on street car line in New Orleans?

Can anyone recommend a nice 4 star hotel on or very near the street car line in New Orleans? We prefer double beds, a modern bath, and some space. Cleanliness and safety are also prime concerns. I've read so many reviews I'm a bit overwhelmed. Is it possible to find something around $200 a night?

TIA

I always stay at the Hilton Garden Inn:

Hilton Garden Inn New Orleans French Quarter/CBD
821 Gravier Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA 70130
Tel: +1-504-324-6000 Fax: +1-504-324-6307

Walking distance to everything including the riverfront, Canal Street, and even about 10-15 minutes to Cafe du Monde! It's two blocks to Canal Street where you can catch the Canal Street streetcar.

I get different rates every time I go (depending on season), but never higher than about $150. One time I snagged a special for $89.

I don't know how many stars it is, but I have always been very comfortable. The room comes with a microwave and fridge (which I never use). Wireless internet is free.

You can do an II Getaway into Avenue Plaza for way less than that. I would say it is closer to a 3* over a 4* hotel. Nice bathrooms, but not fancy, huge, marble baths. It is right on St. Charles (the streetcar street). I posted more about it earlier today. click

I swear, I'm not a shill for this place, it is just my preferred location in NOLA, so I wanted to share.

I have stayed at Intercontinental on St. Charles multiple times before and been very happy with it and it is on the streetcar. Sometimes the rates are decent and I have had success getting deals last minute via when booking directly to the hotel is too expensive. The club rooms with breakfast and food/drink in the evening is worth it if you would use them and if the premium is not too high.

I have walked home myself from the French Quarter and no issues for a single woman if you use the normal caution since they are major streets.

If you like funky, I have stayed at the Hilton St. Charles across the street which used to be a Hotel Monaco before Katrina and still retains a lot of the quirky furnishings. Service not quite up to the par of IC across the street.

I have stayed at Sheraton, Marriott, etc. on Canel and they are decent if not inspiring hotels. There are some interesting ones in the French quarter but they are far busier and can be a plus or minus for people.

What dates do you need? Can probably give you an idea if you can get a reasonable rate or not.

We stay here also to extend our exchange into the French Quarter. I've always used priceline to get a room at the price I want. In fact, the last time we stayed there, they upgraded us to a suite since we arrived so late (around midnight in NOLA but only 10pm west coast time).

Thanks for the info, especially regarding single women. I'll be with a girlfriend, but wasn't sure if it would be safe to walk from the French Quarter late in the evening. I'm hoping to go sometime during Jazzfest. I think the lineup doesn't come out until sometime in January, so I'm not set on either weekend. I did see a flight/combo package out of Boston, staying at either the Montelone or Harrah's for a four night stay at under a thousand dollars a person. I also want to do some sightseeing in addition to the fest, but don't want to rent a car. Are these good options? We waited too long to book last year, and I don't want to miss out again.

Cissy,

If I really wanted to go down to JazzFest in NOLA, I would take the approach I use most year for the Montreal International Jazz Festival and book refundable or award reservations for both weekends for the range of dates I would like to travel before the lineup comes out. Then after I decide which weekend I prefer and the likely dates of the trips, I cancel the excess days / reservations.

I checked briefly and Intercontinental has Entertainment book rate (but may not get points in US) for $199 and AAA rate of $219.

With a confirmed reservation, I can then shop for less expansive flights and/or packages and/or priceline the hotel.

If you want to stay at IC and would be staying 2 or 4 nights, I would suggest that you sign up for the Ambassador program for $150 or 24K points where you get a 2 for 1 free night certificate and a 5K certificate which you can trade for another 2 for 1 free night certificate if you wish on TUG.

I just returned from NOLA about 2 weeks ago. While I was there I kept my eye out for hotels that I might want to stay in based on their location. My husband has bad knees and cannot walk a long distance. I noticed that the Courtyard by Marriott on St Charles was right by the St Charles Steet Car. You would walk out the front door of the hotel and hop onto the street car. It is also about 1/2 block from Canal. I thought it was a great location.

I stayed at the Renaisance Arts Hotel. This was a great hotel rated at least 4 stars in the books that I saw. However, it is about 4 or 5 blocks from the street car stop and probably 1/2 to 1 mile walk to the French Quarter.

I don't mind walking...in fact I like to walk around the cities I vacation in so the Renaissance was perfect for me.

I was there toward the end of August and I paid $89.00 per night which I thought was a bargain. I shopped online a lot for a good rate on a good hotel before I went. The rates seem to fluctuate a lot but you can get some good prices on NOLA hotels, except during Mardi Gras.

Have fun.
