Hotel in Athens, Greece

I was going to book a Marriott in Athens for two nights next May but then looked at booking.com and saw so many options for different hotels. Does anyone have any recommendations for what areas in Athens are safe/convenient and for specific hotels.

I have friends who stayed here for 2 nights - https://homeandpoetry.reserve-online.net/about. They really liked it and the reviews are very good. My wife and I are going to Greece for a family event - we're not Greek and we're looking at this hotel as well.
