Considering this vehicle for my daughter. Told her if she commuted to college instead of dorming on campus I would buy her a car. I've done some homework and negotiated this deal with a local certified dealer. Any thoughts would be appreciate but she does have her heart set on a recent model Honda Accord.

Here's the details. From what I can see its a good price.

31k miles
6 cyclinder
bluetooth
in dash navigation
leather wood and alloy accents
dual power and heated seats
Moon
7yr/100 mile power train, 12 mon/12,000 bumper to bumper
6 CD changer
17 in wheels

Anyone price least lately? I don't see alot of 6cyc to compare and not sure how important that is.

I think that is a decent price.

Just helped a friend negotiate a 2010 Accord LXP last week so been looking at Accords and Camrys with her for a while.

It had 4 cylinder, 32k miles, local private owner trade in with the same warranty you mentioned. She bought it for $16,100 with 2.69% financing for 60 months. They also had a 6 cylinder but she was fine with the pick-up with the 4 and the 4 had better gas mileage so she went with that.

Did you check kbb.com? I am happy if I can get the car close to the private seller price from the dealer... :)

I dont think it is such a great deal to be honest. I have an 09 EX with sunroof and only paid 14,800 with 30K miles (bought in 2011). I secured my financing prior to negotiating...I think it gave me better leverage. My vehichle was off lease with all maintenace records. Granted, I do live in MD and you are in NY so there may be some price fluctuation due to region. The other thing I would suggest is to look at the 4cylinder LX models. With gas prices rising it is certainly something to consider. My husband drives the same model and year but with a manual transmission and he gets very close to 500 miles on a full tank. I get about 420.

Thats a pretty good deal.
I would buy a Camry though.
A much better driving car on the open road.
None of that Honda 'road feel' stuff.

My wife has an 06 and she loves it, I hate it.
I want drive more than 100 miles in it.

There is a big difference in "feel" between Toyotas and Hondas. I like the driver feedback from a Honda. I went from owning 4 Volvo 140/240 series (starting in 1971) in a row to a Honda. The Honda has almost as much road feel as the Volvos did. The turning radius is not as good.

The cars are remarkably reliable. I have a 2002 Honda Civic GX that need major repairs after 150K and the scorching summer that we had last year. We bought a new Honda Fit AND got the old one repaired. So far, so good.

I think that the car selection is a really good one. What year is the one you are negotiating for?

The more we check the more we've confirmed its a good price for this area. We test drove it today and it felt great. Super clean with a really quiet engine.

Looked at the Nissan and Toyota brand and preferred Honda. The price point was also better for comparable models. We've had a great experience so far with our '05 Oddessey so that is art of it as well. The way this car we be used and maintained it will be a great car for my daughter for years to come and then will give her a little trade in value that the same can't be said for many other comparable cars.

Now have to wait to see if my credit union will give me better rate than Honda.

After much research, we bought a new Hyundai Elantra limited for my daughter. She drives to college about 2,000 miles a month, and the mileage and warranty on the Elantra are fabulous. She loves it and it was only a couple thousand more than a used Honda - albeit with no navigation.

I'm sure it's good. You shopped around so you know what's out there. We just bought a new used car and in some ways we felt like we paid too much...and of course people are telling us we paid too much...but until you're there in the trenches really looking at what's available, you don't really know what prices are like. Hope your daughter enjoys her new car and has it for many safe and happy journeys!

According to KBB, http://www.kbb.com/honda/accord/200...&options=2281837|true&pricetype=private-party

Excellent is $19,300 and very good condition is $18,700, so the price isn't bad, but I wouldn't buy that for a daughter. I think a brand new four cylinder LX is about the same price and unless she really wants that leather interior, V6, nice wheels, etc... I think that it would be smarter to get a new car with a warranty that you know the history and that she can keep until after college.

I have an Accord EX V6 and it is nice to have the extra power, but you really don't need it. The four cylinders are pretty good and gas mileage is a little bit better than a six cylinder. You should be able to buy a new 2011 or 2012 for about $20,000. See this link

I recently helped with the purchase of a 2009 Honda Civic LX, and I think this is a great car. College age driver, first time buyer, cost was about $12,600 IIRC with still six months left on the factory warranty. We drove the 09 Accord but it felt almost too big for him, and cost a lot more. Keep in mind mpg and associated cost.

Can I comment that I think your daughter should live on campus? None of my business, really, but i think it's an important stage in the transition to adulthood for those who can handle it (and where money isn't a huge issue).

Im with jerseygirl

Its hardly the college experience if you still live with mom and dad...I too think kids need a transition period between the time living at home and when they will be on their own....College is that transition for many.....

Is this whats best for your daughter and what she wants or are you bribing her with the car?...(just asking)

As far as the cost of the car, I'd agree it is a good deal. Average retail for it being a certified (including a warranty) should be around $20k with those options. You didn't mention coupe or sedan, but the prices are almost identical, so not a big deal.

As far as the car, one thing I would think about is your daughters driving skills. The V6 in my Accord ('03) is really peppy, so it is a pretty quick car. And, being in NY, her driving to and from school, would something with AWD or 4WD be better for the winters? Especially since you are almost forcing her to drive in bad weather with the bribe.

As far as the commute or live on campus discussion, I'd agree that living on campus is a great step toward growing up, being self sufficient. My wife was forced to live at home during college and hated it because of what everyone else did. She wasn't a prisoner or anything, but making friends or being part of a group of friends is a lot harder when you are not part of the every day life of college. The people that do live on campus will see your daughter as a visitor to 'their' campus. My 2 cents.

I can't comment on the price, but I know the quality. We bought a 2004 Accord EX V6 new, and put a ton of miles on it. Last summer we sold it to our son. The engine has plenty of pep, and after all the miles the car still runs like a new car.

Actually, we've owned four Hondas, and still have a 2007 CR-V, and we've never had a major repair on any of them. Just maintenance and tires. Oh, and the occasional body work. My wife has a knack for having people run into her. (In her most recent mishap, she was driving 30 mph, when a young kid, apparently texting, smashed into the back of her car.)

the girl can do as she pleases. If this is the deal she took, then, that's her biz.

I lived on campus (4+ hrs from home) paying tuition + all my expenses, worked full time and did without a car. I musta had sucky parents since so many kids seem to not have to pay any of their college nor living expenses nor work until after college and they also get free cars!!! Obviously, "the college experience" varies greatly among individuals.

My mother attempted to threaten me with community college, but I was able to laugh at that ridiculous threat since there was no leverage whatsoever. My money, my choice, see ya at the holidays.

The only problem I see in this scenario is what if in year 2, she no longer wants to live with mom and dad? Does she give the car back? I'd say yes.

Driving vs Dorm

I think living with mom and dad and going to college is just like being in high school all over again. Let her spread her wings and fly. As far as the car issue, in her defense, buy her a less expensive car.

I think all dads are in the marshmallow category.. my parents paid for my tuition.. dorm... and bought me a car.. :D I wouldn't change my college experience and valued not coming out of school in debt more now than back then though.. back then I was definitely more grateful for the car.. :p

Yeah, it's incredible, isn't it? Our "new" car is a 2004 and we can't believe how much it added to our insurance. And we're completely stalling on letting our 17yo get her license--as long as she has just a permit, our rates don't go up.

so...are we considering a 15 year old Volvo Wagon now???

You would think that would make a difference but in NY it really doesn't matter. 3 cars 3 primary drivers. If she is listed as primary we're getting whacked no matter what car it is, maybe we save $750 or so.

If I downsized to 2 cars and was silent on her and just assume coverage as an occassional driver I could get around the cost, which is what I assume the average person does because how can they afford to pay to insure their teenagers at those rates. The Ins company almost forces families to commit fraud.

I honestly wouldn't do that because its not right if in fact she is a primary driver, but its also not right that the billion dollar Ins Co can charge outrageous prices either. Of course in the long run its the little guy that gets whacked, because as my friend reminded me, Ins Co don't lose money, they just adjust their rates.

Wait, it's $3400 for three cars with three drivers? I think we're paying almost that much for two cars, and only one has collision. So $3400 doesn't sound that bad to me. I thought it was $3400 ADDITIONAL to add her with this one new car.

It is additional. $4800 total
