A Coach Leaves Deadwood, South Dakota,
in 1890

Let's hear it for the Dakotas — North and South — which joined the Union as states number 39 and 40 on this date in 1889. The area might seem peripheral to many. After all, the two states combined are home to less than half a percent of the US population. But the former Dakota Territory is central in another way: Rugby, North Dakota, lays claim to the geographic center of North America, while Belle Fourche, South Dakota, is the geographic center of the United States.

"If you will take a map of the United States and fold it in the middle, eastern edge against western, and crease it sharply, right in the crease will be Fargo." — John Steinbeck in Travels with Charley

And if you visit Mount Moriah cemetery (aka "Boot Hill") in Deadwood, you can view the gravesites of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane...
