We are not going to have a car. Suggestions on the best way to get to Diamond Head? Looks like bus is $3 but not sure if it is a direct route or if we have to switch busses. Also not sure if the pickup/drop off is convenient to HHV. With $24 for a round trip on the bus (for 4), wondering if Uber or taxi might be the best bet.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

You can do it on a single bus without switching. It's not too bad of a ride, depending on the time of day.

The bus should be pretty convenient. Uber works well also in Waikiki. shaka

There are always Charlie's Taxi vans sitting at the entrance lobby of Grand Waikikian. We take them from the airport and anywhere around Waikiki we need to go. Airport is a flat rate.

You might need UberXL for 4 people.

Seniors and Retired Military get discounts for the Bus with free transfers for the whole day. We rode the Bus from the Modern Honolulu to Diamond Head. Climbed to the top of Diamond Head Rode the Bus back. Travel like the locals. From the Modern Honolulu we walked to the Rainbow Cafe. But then in our old age we try and limit ourselves to 10 to 13 miles of walking per day.

Do the buses, taxis, or Uber drop you off inside the tunnel? Is the trolley an option? I think that does go through the tunnel.

Don't know about taxis, Uber or trolley, but the city bus does not go in the tunnel. It's not too long of a walk from the nearest bus stop to the tunnel entrance. You can see the bus stop locations and the tunnel location on this image:

I think anyone on the site knows we are BUS people, love the BUS and are major advocates of NOT getting a car in Waikiki and walking or taking the BUS. However, we would never say "Travel like the locals" when referring to the BUS. The locals all have cars, except those that are too poor to have cars or live in the downtown area without parking spots then perhaps they don't have cars. In our Condo which has a parking spot for everyone unit, and is right in the middle of all the buses, everyone but us have cars. Tourists use the BUS quite a bit when staying in Waikiki residents don't unless they can't afford a car.

I know it won't work for many, but l like renting a bicycle and riding to Diamond Head. It's a scenic ride getting there, parking is free, and my legs are a renewable resource.

We took the bus to Diamond Head and were dropped off in the street outside the park. We took an Uber back to the resort, and they came through the tunnel and picked us up by the check in.
How long ago was this? We were there last May (2022), and at that time Uber/Lyft would just bring us as far as the parking area outside the tunnel, as they were not allowed to go through the tunnel. But it was still better than being dropped off at the bus stop on the main road.

It was in December 2022. We sat on benches in the circle where the trolleys drop off.

I like to walk from HHV to Diamondhead and then walk to the top. It’s a good day of exercise!

We enjoy walking back from Diamond Head to HHV. There’s a great shaved ice place over on Kuhio. Larger portions, tastier, and cheaper than the one on The main drag.

Ice Monster? Or a smaller place? We always liked an Ice Monster every now and then. We lived one block away. shaka

I’m trying to find the name. It’s completely outdoor.

Ok, not Ice Monster then. It has a regular storefront. It's not really cheap either so I really didn't think it would be the one you were referencing. shaka

Were you thinking perhaps of Waiola Shave Ice? It's not on Kuhio, but it has outdoor seating and it's close to Leonard's Bakery!

The best shave ice I ever had was at in the middle of Diamond Head after I rode my bike there, but it probably tasted so good because I was really thirsty.

The best Shave Ice I ever had was Ono Shave Ice on Kauai. Sadly they were a victim of COVID and they closed 2 years ago. Paco's Taco's took the space of Ono's Family Restaurant but no one opened in the Shave Ice spot of the building.

Never tried Ono Shave ice but the best I have is Ululanis on Maui. They have opened one here on Oahu but I have not been able to visit it yet. If it is like their Lahaina or Kihei locations it will be awesome.

I would suggest Moster ICE on Kuhio. It is a Japanese take on shave ice and is very yummy.

My favorite shave ice on Oahu is at Waikele shopping center. It is the small hut next to Leonard's Malasada truck. Mountain shave ice is the name IIRC.

Update: So we (family of 4) ended up taking an Uber from HHV to Diamond Trail. The morning was $12.94 and we were dropped off right outside the tunnel (it was before 7 so the tunnel was not yet open). Coming back, the Uber was $14.93. Both these amounts are less tip. Worked out well, Ubers were quick to arrive.

We have used a couple of Ubers and Lyft's on this trip and they have been coming quickly also. shaka
