We're currently at HHV in the Lagoon tower. We have plenty of stuff we are going to be doing around Oahu (Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, Dole Plantation, some beaches, Alan Wongs, etc.), but what on site activities and/or amenities (especially free/cheap ones) should we make sure not to miss?

We've already checked out the lagoon, the nearest pool, and the beach. We plan on hitting Lappert's for (at least) a quart of Kauai Pie.

Don't miss the Friday night fireworks. It's every Friday at 7:45pm after the Rockin Rainbow show by the Super pool. The fireworks bring crowds into HHV so expect crowds in all of the onsite shops and restaurants before and after the fireworks.

LOL, I don't know about free/cheap onsite activities but you should have a newsletter (I think they leave a copy in each unit) - http://www.hiltonhawaiianvillage.com/resort_activities/documents/monthlyupdate.pdf (The last page has a list of onsite activities).

Like any mega resort, it's less expensive to eat offsite. Have a wonderful time :)

Don't miss the penguins. It still boggles my mind that they can live in a hot climate.

The best place to watch the fireworks is sitting on the retaining wall on the beach just to the left of the Tropics Bar.

Check the newsletter in the room for the wildlife tour.

Off property: Go to the Bishop Museum. Entrance ticket also includes planetarium shows.

1. Go across the street to the Wailana Coffee House for breakfast and have the macadamia nut pancakes.
2. Walk over to the Ala Moana beach for an afternoon
3. Buy a pint of Kauai Pie ice cream at Lapperts and eat it up in your room.

The blue angels will be practicing this week for the show this weekend.
If you don't mind walking there's ala Moana shopping center (ewa direction), or all of Waikiki (kokohead direction). There's an indoor mini golf course, the zoo, the aquarium, international market place, the natatorium, and right next door is fort derussy with its own funky little museum.
If you don't have a rental car, try the bus. Most of the bus drivers are friendly (when they're not stressed by the traffic) and are willing to tell you how to get to almost anyplace.
Have you even to bishop museum? There's a planetarium there with a show re "your sky tonight". And yes, you can get there on the bus.
Hope you have a great time. Send me a PM if you have any specific questions.

Penguins? Where are they and can anyone go see them if your not a guest at the Hilton? Would love to see them during our trip next month.

Anyone can walk around the property--and it's worth walking around. The penguins are by the Ali'i Tower. Enjoy!

Free things to do in Honolulu

Check the Friday Newspaper to see events for the week.

We don't have a car when we are Honolulu so I am giving you the real live way we do it. There is parking available which is Hawaii reasonably priced.

Sundays at 2:00 PM the Royal Hawaiian Band usually plays for free for an hour at the Kapiolani Park at the other end of Waikiki Beach. We usually walk there along Kalakaua and back but you can bus it if you want and don't like the walk. The walk takes you to some of best shops and restaurant in Waikiki as well as great sunsets at Dukes Statue. The Royal Hawaiian Band also usually plays for free at the Iolani Palace downtown at 12:eek:o Noon on Fridays. The 19 or 20 Bus goes right there since it is a rather long walk but it is doable.

If you are there on a 1st Friday which will be the next Friday there is an free fun Art Walk and Party starting at 5:00 PM in downtown Honolulu. Need to take the 2, 13, 19 or 20 Bus and get off at Chinatown. Lots of people and great martinis and drinks for $4 at Indigo a restaurant bar on Nuuanu Street.

Some clubs have free admission with dancing others have a cover.

Sundays at 5:00 PM on Lewers there is a free concert/hula dancing next to the Yardhouse restaurant. This one you need to walk to it is a very short walk.

On Friday nights after the 7:45 fireworks at the HHV there is a great Hawaiian Band called Olamana playing at the Tapa Bar. They are friends. They also play on Saturday night at 8:00. They are very poplular so get there around 7:30 or earlier and get seats. You can see the fireworks from right by the bar. This is all free you just buy the drinks you want.

Let me know how you do.

We made dark chocolate, macadamia, coconut pancakes for breakfast this morning.
3. Buy a pint of Kauai Pie ice cream at Lapperts and eat it up in your room.
Already bought a quart. LOVE having Lappert's this close!

We're planning on watching the fireworks from the lanai. We have an ocean view room (on the 23rd floor!).
