Hey, Big Spender.

If you hand a tip of $50+ to the toll booth attendant, you might be a highballer.

Seriously now... don't you just hate it when someone makes you an offer higher than your asking price? I mean, what are they thinking... that I need a handout or something?

Nothing drives me more crazy than that.

Indeed. I've bought real estate (in Calgary, not SW Florida) where I paid well over the asking price. It was still a VERY good deal.

I think you will find that Trump is what he wants to be, whenever and whereever. I'm pretty sure that that he won't be posting here.

Game on with this thread !!

Hello! My name is John from Nigeria and I am a very successful international banker. I saw your ad and would like to rent your lovely accommodations. I work for a a large corporation, and they will be paying you directly with a cashier's check in the amount of $10,000 USD. I hope this will not be a problem, but my company has a 10K minimum for cutting travel checks. Please deduct your rental price plus $500 for your trouble, and wire the remaining funds to me.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

There's my segue; I only consider lowballs when it comes to cocktail glasses. In reference to anything else, like a rental, I disregard the term. Though highball glasses work well for certain cocktails.

Traditionally, most drinks are highballs. Rum and Coke, Gin and Tonic, and several simple drinks which follow the formula of the highball are now often served in lowball or old-fashioned glasses, but they were once all highballs. Here's a list of highballs that every bartenter should know...

Origin of Highball Glass
The term 'highball' itself refers to a family of mixed drinks that have a higher proportion of mixer to alcohol. The exact origin of the highball name is unclear. However, a person named Patrick Duffy, who was a New York barman, claimed that he invented the highball in 1895. However, there are certain references indicate that the term highball did not surface till 1898. The highball glass was named such because railroad practices during the 19th century included raising a ball on a pole to indicate to a passing train that the driver needed to move at a quicker pace than usual by speeding up. The highball drink is also served quickly, hence, the name. Furthermore, the time of day when the drink is consumed may also explain the name - a cocktail is generally enjoyed in the evenings, a few hours before dinner, while a highball is consumed in the afternoon, which the sun is still high in the sky.

The Online Etymology Dictionary suggests that the name originated around 1898 and probably derives from ball meaning a "drink of whiskey" and high because it is served in a tall glass. The name may refer to the practice of serving drinks in the dining cars of trains powered by steam locomotives, when the engine would get up to speed and the ball that showed boiler pressure was at its high level, known as "highballing". Or the name may have come from the railroad signal meaning "clear track ahead."

The question is, does drinking one or more highballs make one more likely to be a highballer?

I'd never put together that for me a lowball offer is as distasteful as a highball cocktail, but a lowball cocktail, now we're talkin'...let alone a highball offer.
