What's the real deal with booking a Hgvc resort that is not your home resort. I'm looking to buy into HGVC club on the resale market and I'm being told not to worry to much where I buy because I can go anywhere I want.
You can use the points for any property. It only matters if you want a high sought after location/season such as skiing or Hilton Oahu or a any particular resort for a holiday week.
You may be able to book right at the 9 month window, but I've never tried.
If you always want Christmas week in Orlando, you need to buy that type of week. It will allow you to book 12 months in advance for a Saturday - Saturday stay. If you want a different room size or don't want Saturday - Saturday, you'll book at the 9 month window, even if you own there.
Weeks 51,52 are platinum weeks so you will need to own a platinum contract to book at 12 months. If you own gold or silver you will have to wait for the 9 month window to open and you may not have enough points for a full week.
Booking Orlando at Christmas is not a problem, if you have the points available. At 9 months out you can get whatever you want (room size, location). Even at 4-5 months out I have seen plenty of availability if you are not set on a particular location.
IMO, there is no need for home resort preference for Orlando, as long as you can plan ahead.
Orlando or Las Vegas seems no problem in general in any given time. Both are high in supplies so there are always something available.
I bought Parc Soleil in Orlando in 2009 and never stayed there since then - we stayed every year at every other place. So it is true that it doesn't matter too much where you own - except if you have preference of staying at certain location and maintenance fee can vary based on where you own.
Week 52 might be tougher if you need a specific room configuration
We now have 4 HGVC locations in Orlando however if you're planning to spend most of your HGVC stays in Orlando for Christmas and need specific accommodations (two beds in the 2nd bedroom, a three bedroom at the lower point value, etc) you might want to consider buying at the Orlando resort that offers your preferred room configuration. I'm assuming the two bedrooms with two beds in the 2nd bedroom and the three bedroom units at the lower point resorts (SeaWorld and Tuscany) will be booked first.
For example, right now from April through August, the Tuscany location has less availability in the three bedrooms and two bedroom with two beds in the second bedroom compared to the studios, one bedroom, and two bedrooms with one bed in each bedrooms. But I don't know what availability looked like at the 9 month mark.
Home Resort only matters if you plan to book during the home resort booking window and stay the full 7 nights in the exact unit size/type, season that you own and check-in on the designated resort check-in day for your resort otherwise at the 9 month mark it's a free for all (whoever grabs it first wins ).
