I wonder why Hilton didn’t convert some of the floors within one of the existing Hilton Waikoloa Village towers to timeshares villas (like they did with the Kalia Tower at the HHV) or convert a whole tower.

This old article from Feb 2008 states “The complex on the Kohala Coast is extremely expensive to maintain and its occupancy is consistently below Hilton standards. Even aggressive promotions and marketing efforts have failed to keep the hotel anywhere close to full.”

My hubby thinks the new HGVC locations are too far away from the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort. The new HGVC resorts look nice but hubby can't get over the location and lack of ocean view. LOL, I might have to drag him kicking and screaming to the new nearby HGVC resorts:rofl:

I for one don't like most hotel rooms to TS convertions. So I'm glad that HGVC built a resort from the ground up to be a top notch TS resort.

Also one problem with many of the Hawaii TS resorts is how to you deal with the view problem. Everyone wants the best view and there are always people who aren't going to like their view. HGVC took are of that by giving no one a view.

I have never stayed in a hotel room conversion TS, but I would think with some proper planning and good architecture, a good conversion should be possible.

It just seems that if Hilton only wants to build new resorts in three areas, a conversion at some of it's hotels could be a benefit to those of us who want more than those three primary locations.

I don't know, just my two cents. :)

The Walk

We loved walking between the HGVC units and the Hilton resort. We bought two little flashlights (after trying to do it in the dark on our first night) and really enjoyed the short walk. That was a highlight of the area to us - being able to walk everywhere. Of course, we did take the shuttle on occasion - but mostly walked everywhere within the village. (I actually lost 2 pounds on vacation!)

The only hotel room conversion I've been to is the HGVC Kalia tower and I thought they did a good job. The only disappointment at the HGVC Kalia tower is that there are no two bedroom villas. I guess I was more concerned about what action Blackstone might take in the future if they can't make the Hilton Waikoloa Village into a money maker. I would hate to see it sold. I would rather have them convert an existing tower or tear down & rebuild a HGVC tower.

Yes, I agree but I think HGVC handles the view issue very well by requiring more points for a better view (at least at the HHV). I guess for any future HGVC tropical destination resorts (Hawaii, Caribbean, etc), I would prefer a HGVC resort located within a resort complex with at least ocean view as an option.

Good Point :) ... I agree as long as it's not like W57 St and more like the HGVC Kalia Tower (of course with two bedrooms villas included too)

Thanks for the info. We haven't been to HGVC Waikoloa yet. Maybe the resort area map makes the distance look worst than it really is.

Actually it's not the walk that my hubby minds. When we travel to a tropical destination he prefers the feel of a mega resort complex with onsite shops, entertainment and dining options (a self contained resort). I can't wait to visit. I'm hoping that the new HGVC resorts feel connected to the Hilton Waikoloa Village (similar to the Harborside resort at Atlantis).

the walk

It is about a 10 minute walk to the hotel on a path that goes from HGVC to the resort; then you could keep going and it takes you to the Marriott; then goes on to the King's Shops; then on to the Queens Marketplace.

It was not a busy place at all when we were there over Xmas. I've been to the hotel resort before, and it was packed. Not this year though. We were at Atlantis in August - and it was tooooo crowded for us. Have not been to the Timeshare portion however, so cannot compare. HGVC Waikoloa was at full capacity, yet it never felt crowded. It was just right for us.
