Help with travel from NJ to Lake Tahoe

Can anyone who has traveled from the NJ/Philly area traveled to Lake Tahoe tell me the best way to get there? It seems flying into Reno or Sacramento there is always a layover. Is there anything I am missing?

You could fly non-stop to SFO, but you'd have a longer drive.

You don't say when you are going. In July United has a nonstop to SMF from EWR, and JetBlue from JFK. SMF and RNO are definitely the closest airports.

We flew from Savannah to Reno.

We are going in August

In summer its about 2 hours from Sac and under an hour from Reno. Add about 35% if traveling to on Fri or back on Sunday.
