Help with RCI?

We are thinking of putting in our first ever exchange. It's for week 51 of 2016. The question I have is this. What if something happens between now and then we are not able to go during that week? We will have put in our money to exchange it, do we get that money back or do we forfeit it along with our TPU points? (we have a fixed week with RCI). Ir ealize we have already deposited our week, so I am not asking about getting that back, but is the exchange set in stone? Thanks.

You would lose the exchange fee and you would lose a % of your tpu's.

If I click on a week 51 (which in 2016 would be the week before Christmas, this is what comes up:

You have elected not to protect your Exchange vacation. In the event that you change or cancel outside of the grace period, your Exchange fee will be forfeited and your Trading Power may be affected. The following policies will apply:

Also, you can purchase cancel protection that will restore all of your TPU if you cancel. I generally don't unless I'm *really* unsure about something.
