Has anyone had any luck giving away their Australian timeshares or deeding them back to the resort? We own Mansfield Country Resort (RCI#0827) and Sandy Point Beach Resort (RCI#1815 AND II SPB). They are both affiliated with http://www.classicholidays.com.au/home/ If we gave them away, it is my understanding that an Aussie attorney would want app $600/wk for closing (ouch). If we just stopped paying the maintenance fee, what would happen? I don't think it would impact our credit report since the mf goes to this Australian company....ideas?? Thanks.

I owned at Port Pacific Resort in Australia. When I approached the resort regarding just handing my interval back to them they declined but suggested that I add my interval to their own in-house set of listings. They said similar units were listed at and selling for about $1000-$1500.

I asked them to list my unit for $0 as long as the buyer would pick up any legal or transfer fees. I had to e-sign some documents to get it listed but it was gone within a few weeks.

If your home resort group provides listings of units for sale to its owners and exchangers it could be worth a try.

I am not sure if there would be any real consequence to just walking away. Someone else can chime in, but can an Australian company put something on a credit report here? Can they come after you legally? What are the REAL consequences of walking away, as so many others do here in the US?

Is there a real downside to just walking away? I know some folks have to do this as a last resort with US based timeshares, and it may get on their credit report. But not sure about an international (Australia, Africa, etc.) walkaway option.

anyone else have thoughts?

The subject of what happens when a person is domiciled in one Country and TS is situated in another and defaults has been discussed in several threads.

Layperson opinions have been all over the board.

Given the many variables I seriously doubt one can get an expert opinion in writing without consulting a Barrister where they are domiciled and he will probably have to consult with same where property is situated.

Carolyn, I am in the process of selling my week at Mansfield Country resort. I found a buyer by sending a" for sale" sign to the resort which they posted on their bulletin board. Took six months but might be worth a try.

A local Mansfield legal firm is handling the closing with estimated cost of $385. Buyer is paying closing costs plus a resort transfer fee of $125. PM me if you would like more specific info.

There are no laws allowing commercial debt to cross international lines. Debts accrued in one country can't be collected in another. I have been sorely tempted to max my US credit cards out before I move back to Australia, only my conscience objects. The thing is the bad credit from Australia will remain on your Aussie Credit rating for 10 years whilst the bad credit in America only remains on your American credit rating for 7....

Carolyn,
I have just started using TUG and saw your post. I currently own 2 timeshares at Mansfield and I'm interested in getting rid of them. Did you stop paying the maintenance fee? If so, what happened?

Hello. I just started using TUG and see your post from 2014. I own two timeshares at Mansfield and I'm ready to sell them. Would you mind sharing with me more specifics about how you sold yours? How did you word the "for sale" sign? Did you send it to Mansfield or to Classis Holidays?
Thank you for your time.

I owned a week at a different timeshare resort in Australia on the Gold Coast, and sold it on eBay for a little more than I had paid for it. That ownership was a shareblock like South Africa resorts and the transfer was simple. The buyer was in California. Of course that was well over a decade ago, and it may not be as easy to sell on eBay these days.
