The reason I ask has to do with credit ratings. In that case the justification (or lack thereof) for being in jail probably doesn't matter.

No, the principled journalist is my son from my first marriage. My stepson is turning 39 in December, so youth doesn't count as an excuse here. He does have serious myasthenia and is on disability, but he wasn't when he defaulted on the car and the mobile home....
