Hello. We are thinking of purchasing an additional 1000 points to be able to get oceanfront at most Marriotts in peak season and make it to the select level of ownership. The salesperson said Marriott will not honor getting to the select level if we buy these points on the resale market. Price for 1000 points was $12k plus closing costs with 2k bonus points thrown in as incentive.

Can someone tell me if the above is true - I can't bump my level to Select without buying through Marriott?

Thank you so much.

As noted, this is not accurate. You should be able to buy those points resale for around $5 per point total including transfers. You may want to consider going resale and getting to Executive level for almost the same price.

100% a lie. I did this exact thing myself earlier this year. I went from 3,000 points, added a 1,000 point resale transaction, and after paying the $3/point fee I'm now Select.

The salesperson doesn't want you to take his food off the table. You can buy the points resale and reach your "Select" level.

I bought addtional points to get to the select level based on a plethora of lies similar to what you are being told. Getting to the select level only gets you additional points. The additional "perks" are mostly BS. Only buy if you want more points, and then buy them resale. Take it from someone who plunked down $25,000 for virtually nothing. MVC reps will tell you anything to induce purchase. Anything truthful is merely an accident. I sincerely believe they are trained to mislead.

I can also confirm, went from Select to Executive with a 1,000 point resale purchase.
Resale points are like other points after you pay the $3 junk fee.
He is technically correct, if you purchase resale and don't pay the fee then they are restricted, but of course everyone does when they purchase and submit.
If you are paying more than $5-6. run away
