After reading posts of terrific car rental rates, I keep coming up negative for the dates/places I need.:wall: Do I have good rates for the following?

Maui 6/28/09-7/11/09 Compact car $357.34 incl tax/fees

Carlsbad,CA 3/5/09-3/14/09 Minivan $345.59 incl tax/fees
92011

I have tried Priceline, Hotwire, Costco and direct sites. Dates are inflexible but can adjust Maui car size to economy if necessary. Thank you for any help on this! :)

We have a trip coming up to the Big Island in March and the cheapest I've been able to find is $337 for a full size for two weeks. I think I got that rate at least 45 days ago and rates are not coming down. So I haven't been seeing great rates - much higher than our trip last year.

All you can do is make your reservation and check every day. At least it's no penalty if you cancel and re-reserve.

Cathy,
yesterday I booked a mini van for our Carlsbad trip in March but it will be picked up from the San Diego airport. I booked it using Costco's link to Budget. My total for a week is $262.78 including tax etc. I usually keep checking until the day we leave because rates change so much.

Good luck

I was just looking at car rentals rates for Maui tonight. I reserved Alamo full-size for 13 days for $340 (Costco), or Hertz in a Camry for $504 (AAA). I would *love* to hear of any better deals. We need at least a full-size car.

Keep watching the prices for Hawaii....For our trip last February, the prices went down considerably about a month before our trip. We were able to get a full-sized vehicle on Maui from Alamo for $99 a week plus tax. Thought that was quite a bargain compared to the over $300 price of our original reservation.

JackieD- Thank you for your response. How many days are you getting? We are needing it for 9 days as we have to drive to Las Vegas for a 50th birthday get-together and a week's timeshare stay.

SherryS -- was your $99 thru a Priceline type or thru Alamo?

I often use carrentals.com, if only to compare lots of direct prices from many vendors. Gives you an idea of what 'direction' to head.

Yes, we got a better price about six weeks out than we're seeing this year. I'm hoping that by the end of January we'll do a little better.

Who did you book through, Bev? I reserved a car through Hertz (10% CAA discount) for Oct. 2009, and a Ford Focus or similar is US 475.12 (approx. total).

I found that good rate through Orbitz, where I always check and compare all prices, then went to the Alamo website and booked directly. Can't remember if I had a small additional discount and/or upgrade from Entertainment Book????

I just checked and it's through Alamo using the Costco codes.

I made the bookings on November 29th and have not seen cheaper rates since.

Thanks, Bev, I'll try that site. I've checked Costco before, but not Alamo through Costco.

Cathy,
my rental is only for one week, Saturday to Saturday. Usually when we travel, I book a car, keep checking rates and then at the last minute bid under what I have on hold on Priceline. Sometimes they come out way lower and sometimes not...

I'm ready for a drop, my late March full size is $232 for 8 days on Alamo via Costco, $99 plus tax sounds great to me...
