I have directv and just ordered the equipment for HD TV with offline antenna for local channels. Do I need to order the HD package for an additional $10.99 month or will my total choice plus package that I now have give me all the HD programs currently available excluding the sports channels, which I never watch anyway? I tried to figure this out on their website, but could not quite seems to comprehend what is and isn't available in HD without the extra program package.

They will be here to install the new dish on Tuesday, so need to know if I need to order package before then.

You don't need to buy a package for local channels.

You can get local channels in HD off the air with just the HD box and the off air antenna. You will have to pay if you want to receive HD DirecTV channels like ESPN, Discovery, HBO, etc.

Good luck with your new dish. It took several DirecTV tech visits and a replacement of the HD antenna to get the system working and I still have problems with pixalation. IMHO, I don't think HD technology is ready fro prime time.

We have an HD TV but I can't answer your question cause you are on Direct TV ~~ We use Comcast but even if you have HD ~~ you still have to pay the extra $'s to receive HD format ~~ regardless of the box ~~ You do get the channel but its not HD ~~ This of course is "JMHO" ~~
