Help me buy a microscope

L

laurac260

Two weeks ago I bought our first microscope for our homeschool classroom, $20 at Meijer, complete with a couple premounted slides, specimen jars, tweezers, a pipette. The kids loved being able to look at things up close. We plucked a leg off a dead cricket and saw the hairs on the leg.

Well today I got to look at the same cricket leg thru a "high school level" microscope, and realized we sure are missing a lot. Wow. We then looked at a fly's wing. Who knew how intricate a fly's wing is? I want to see more myself, and show my kids more of the microscopic world.

The 20$ kit was cool, but I want to upgrade. I have an 11 year old and a 5 year old. I don't need anything high tech, but a REAL microscope, not my 20$ plastic Smithsonian one (not that it didn't serve it's purpose). What would you buy, and where should I look (online shopping would be my first choice).

Thanks in advance!

I saw a microscope at Costco yesterday and thought it looked really nice. Don't know anything about them, but I was considering it. Have no idea if it's the quality you want, but if it isn't, they would take it back.

I have used a Nikon Alphaphot VS for the past 25 years in my office. My ability to earn an income depends upon it. However, I would not trust this instrument to a high school student.

I'd never spend good money on a device that would make my diamond bigger.

Something that would make my ARSE smaller now....:D

But for what they want for liposuction, perhaps I will just get a pair of jeans with words on the bum that read, "objects in this pair of pants are smaller than they appear." :hysterical: (yes, sometimes I crack myself up).
