I am interested in creating a website for our sports team. And, as it turns out, someone else asked me if I could create a website for them. So, I am ready to jump in.
Someone mentioned the book 'Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS', 2nd Edition by Ian Lloyd.
I checked it out on amazon.com, and it sounds very good, but being a novice, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with books or authors in order to get started.
I was told to stay away from the 'Dummies' books, but that was one persons opinion.

Thanks for the help
Bill

I don't think you should re-invent the wheel when there are so many easy to use products already out there. I like www.freewebs.com - click on the link below my name to see my webpage there. BTW - I don't have the free Acct., because it doesn't have enough picture space, but I do have the least expensive for-pay acct. But you can try it out for free.

Denise:
This looks like a great site. We went to Hawaii last year and not only did you give me terrific information, we used your website for a additional information.
I will definitly look into this.

We use "Web Site Design Made Easy" Caskill for my webdesign class that I am currently taking in college. It primarily focuses on writing HTML, XHTML - compliant HTML and CSS. Our class also writes some Java. We only use Notepad to design - a little labor intensive but it gives you full control and the idea is when you do use software and have broken links you know how to fix them.

You may want to pick up/order the Head First HTML with CSS book from your local library and take a look.

A website I use when I need help, tutorials or good reference information for projects I am working on in class is www.echoecho.com If you want to start at the very basics, click on "Tutorial" and "HTML" in the first para graph under page basics.

The advantage of building your own page is that you can choose where to host it and you can make changes outside the parameters offered by hosting sites.

Bill,

I would think that if it's for a sports team, then Denise's advice looks pretty good to me. You mentioned a book, but that goes beyond what a beginner needs to know.

With Denise's site you'll be able to make simple web pages in less than a few hours time. It won't have all the bells and whistles but it has the ability to quickly display as much information as you want and perfect for a beginner.
