I wonder if anyone who has experience with this can share. Employed in one state and obtained employer sponsored insurance in that state but work is flexible allowing person to live and work remotely out of another state. Does the health insurance company frown on it and would it require a local address? I said frown on because of bill back for urgent care / ER visits that will be in a different state and out of network.

I don't think they frown on it per say but if the in network doctors don't extend to your area, you would have to have a plan that covers out of network and that will cost more per visit. Out of network doctors don't have an agreement with the insurance company and although some will bill the insurance company on your behalf others with require you to pay out of pocket and then you will have to file the paperwork and will be re-imbursed based on your percentage of the customary charges.

Some HMO type plans require you to reside in the service area because routine care requires in network. Emergency and urgent care does allow non network, they won't allow the principle holder to live outside the area.

I am thinking for routine appointment I can keep existing doctors, and commute when needed. Just exploring options for when I do move. When it gets frequent then it won't work.

Since your insurance is through your employer, just check to see what doctors, hosipitals, xrays, therapy, etc are covered in your area. This way if you have an emergency you will know which hospital to go to. Many companies have employees in a different state and usually have employee insurance that have coverage more or less nationally. You can find out what is in your network coverage by going to the health insurance website to find this information.

The problem statement is as I have stated in the first post. Medical insurance provider is only local to the state. No other options available. My guess is that residency must show local address.

I carried my COBRA plan from an Iowa employer when I moved back to Wisconsin and didn't have insurance yet.

It was a challenge due to "in network" providers were not available in Wisconsin. We still owned a home in Iowa and I did go back from time to time while hubby & dog were still there (for about 8 months). I had to coordinate medical care (including a surgical procedure) on my trips back to IA.
